I have to be honest, I never cared for it myself. To me it always seemed like George Miller was trying to make a social satire about misogyny and women's rights, while the studio wanted it to be a sophomoric "popcorn movie", with thrills, crude humor and slick ILM effects. The female leads are great (especially Sarandon), but Nicholson just strolls through the film, playing himself.
For me, the film's one saving grace was John Williams, who managed to take what was interesting about the story -- the supernatural elements, the satirical tone, the quaint, coastal setting -- and spin them into one of his most unique efforts.
