Hi, everyone,

Would you help me which edition of Cinema Paradiso to buy? I've found three different on UK Amazon:

- https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000000PH6/ref=sxbs_sxwds-stvpv2_2?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_p=1624861107&pd_rd_wg=gBiLV&pf_rd_r=3Y608X93SHP7KRA6BH82&pf_rd_s=desktop-sx-bottom-slot&pf_rd_t=301&pd_rd_i=B000000PH6&pd_rd_w=DrDrg&pf_rd_i=cinema+paradiso+cd&pd_rd_r=46c9575a-a217-4d98-bd4c-1d5ce7a87918&ie=UTF8&qid=1519325365&sr=2

This must be the first issue, the 'normal'.

- https://www.amazon.co.uk/Cinema-Paradiso-Edi-Original-Soundtrack/dp/B00005J6WZ/ref=sr_1_2_twi_aud_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1519325122&sr=8-2&keywords=cinema+paradiso+soundtrack&dpID=51nEWBJNCxL&preST=_SX300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

This is called Limited Edition, plus one extra track, nothing more...

Remastered... Italian cover.

Sorry guys, I haven't found any information on these releases, so please help me out of this trouble...

I have the last link you shared, its the longest at 23 tracks, but mine is on GDM with a different cover. EM doesn't like that version for some reason.
The ones with a single bonus track are puzzling....why bother?

Depending on your love for the score, I'd get the 23 track long version or the original DRG standard. Original DRG is the tightest, Thor-friendly listen at 38mins. and covers everything important, but missed the busy 'riding reels back and forth to the theater' cue
I always wanted, so I'm sticking with the longer album, which runs around an hour.

Peace!
-Sean

It's the original DRG I have. I've always been content with it, never thought of getting any subsequent release. I bought it when it was first released, and was my first Morricone scoresmile

If I were you I'd get the 23 track version. More on it and it's reasonably priced.

I'm really glad to hear this, as this is one of the scores I've by the maestro I really like. Now I know where to go, many thanks!

I have all of three versions.

My preference is in opposition to Morricone's; I like the expanded edition with 23 tracks (GDM 4000). This is a score that never fails to involve me, and there are many very interesting variations.

Josh, did you ever read why he opposed this one for expansion, in particular?
Given how repetitive some of EM's albums are (Ship Hunters, egads!!!), I always wondered why single out this one - it's a masterpiece, I love every variation of each theme.

I only know that he was not happy that it was out there. Maybe someone else might more detail.

But since it is, I am happy to have it.

The 23 track edition has all of the material that was on the original release.

Ok, so only the third one. That makes the purchase easier! Thank you for all replies again!

Does the remastered 23 track release sound noticeably better than the original?

Sean, you always get me to go back to the scores I haven't pulled out in eons. I am listening to this now and can't believe it's been so long since the last listen. I've the 23 track version as well and it is not enough!

Well shucks that makes my day then E!! :-)

'Cinema' is a real personal one for me & my family...when everyone recognizes the score as easily as, say Star Wars, you know its special.
And for a family that isn't crazy about foreign films to enjoy this one, that's saying something.

Now, we gotta talk about 100 RIFLES...or was that miss Joan?

That's awesome Sean. Mi famiglia is not that tuned into my film music. However, I will say that both kids recognize Dragonheart so that's progress.

It was me, not our Miss Joan who chimed in about 100 Rifles. She does like the Westerns more than I do though. I actually like 100 Rifles. I picked up the FSM release a few years back and found myself looking at other Western scores. Maybe we can get Miss Joan to take a listen too?

Over many many eons, everyone has come around to the right side - my mom hears Barry everywhere, so we always play "what movie wss it you were watching, was it really JB???" & my wife just guesses everything is Silvestri!
Progress is good, keep at 'em!

100 RIFLES is...well it's a "boy score" I think, hopefully that doesn't come over the wrong way, just meaning it's pretty harsh, unless you like those south of the border accents. I saw that exchange about Jerry westerns, meant to jump in, because it's one I tease my wife about that gets a lot of play, which she always guesses incorrectly at.
You two missed BANDOLERO! by the way lol.

Off topic, but since we solved purplerain's conundrum, its ok....and to tie it all up, let's all go play a fantastic (FSM released!!) Ennio western now - GUNS FOR SAN SEBASTIAN!! ;-)

Well, my lovely elderly mother-in-law LOVES the music Goodbye Mr. Chips so that's a wonderful thing. Good for your mom. My family always says "Is that John Williams?" with the exception of Star Wars, Schindler and AI.

Admittedly Sean, the only Morricone western I own is Once Upon A Time In the West. Don't tell Carson that. If you can suggest some others that are as stellar, please do. I'm all ears.

Edw its ok, he rarely dips in over here so you probably got away with it. wink

You should probably go on itunes and listen to the ennio westerns and see which ones grab you.
Or get a compilation.
They are all so different.
If you like OUATITW then Guns for San Seb, as sean suggested, is a good shout. You should probably try my name is Nobody (espec Good luck jack) and every soundtrack collector should own GBU for its richness and variety.

We have had threads on this before but check out Henry's (Morricone) series where he details each film with clips.

So, the elusive Bill Carson appears from the sagebrush! Welcome sir smile
I threw GUNS-SAN SEB. up front because it is the most symphonic, semi-Goldsmith oater, IMO, that is friendly to newbies. And no whistling (hopefully I'm remembering right!), since there was some aversion to that from someone?

I'd rec that as a great intro, that album has it all and flirts with the more outlandish methods EM employed to the west sitting along his soaring symphonic writing.
FSM also did THE FIVE MAN ARMY, which was an early find for me and is in the same zip code as GUNS, at least, but does have more outlandish vocal stuff that may be harder to get used to. Just my IMO, damn I love that album too!

Good thread, keep at it! Where's that Wagner-buffa at now?

Peace,
Sean

I'm thinking that BC was hiding out in the sage brush or stopped by the saloon for some refreshment. Good to see him in this end of town.

Sean and Bill, this is when YouTube is my friend. Guns of San Sebastian sounds like a good fit for me. Thanks pardners.

I am kinda surprised there was no new thread or mention that I have seen for Quartet's 500 edition reissue of Cinema Paradiso (30th Anniversary) last month.

I have the DRG release that was just 17 tracks but it also included a bonus track - the string version of the main theme. The new release has all the songs in Italian. Anyone know if this track is included? Anything else on the old version that is not included in the new version? I know the new version is expanded but I just didn't want to lose any tracks.
