Hardcore gamers may recall some of Mitsuda's prior works back to Chrono Trigger, Radical Dreamers, Chrono Cross, and Xenogears. It is so lovely to have Mitsuda back now for Xenoblade Chronicles 2 given the weak scores we had for Xenoblade Chronicles 1 and the spinoff game after that.
Mitsuda worked with the Kanagawa Philharmonic, the Bratislava Symphony Choir, and Procyon Studio Orchestra so the score has many lovely choral tracks, some intimate piano tracks, and big symphonic tracks. Of course Mitsuda also mixes in elements of rock in the score. This is one of the better video game scores to come out in the last few years.
I've only had a chance to listen to the 40min Sound Selection CD which is excellent. I really hope that this one gets a proper release like the previous two games.
The soundtrack sampler that came with the collected edition is so good! I check the video game music forums everyday hoping to read about an official release. I really dig the variety of music on display with this OST and like the combination of orchestral and electronics.
Another good score by Mitsuda is VALKYRIA: Azure Revolution Original Soundtrack. You can purchase a physical OST online.
It's excellent, although Mitsuda only wrote an hour and a half of it. The other six or so hours is contributed by ACE, Kenji Hiramatsu and Manami Kiyota. Still waiting for an official soundtrack release but given its size, that might not happen (at least on CD).
I could see a release of most of the Mitsuda stuff and the highlights from the rest of it. Japanese companies have done many releases of huge six discs of music in the past.
It's more likely it'll get a blu-ray release, like how all the FFXIV releases have been handled.
I really, really dislike releasing music on Blu-ray. I don’t have a way to get the music on my iTunes (Macs don’t read BD discs). Plus, I don’t use my Bluray player to listen to music. I hope this OST is released on cd.
