Chopin's music sounds like the soundtrack to 70s Euro erotic film. I can see the characters shot in soft focus as they sip wine on the veranda of the estate, the muted colors, and the gauzy gowns worn by the female actors. It is like I am living in a Guido Crepax comic strip when I spin Chopin. It is too bad he wasn't born 125 or so years later. He could have made a fortune as a film composer.

Ha! Since I hate Chopin I was hoping you were going to educate me on why I ought to like him. However, since I also hate sensual 70s euro films you've only confirmed me in my dislike. Shame on you, OnyaBirri.

How can you not like Chopin? Whilst much of his output can be categorised as Nocturnes, Études, Ballades, et al., there is so much variety within each category that an album devoted to one such doesn't become tedious ... provided you have the performer who has the talent to play the music, not just the notes.

If you can't take an album of Ballades ... try his work Les Sylphides ... it's a lovely orchestral work using a mixture of pieces from his collection (there are several orchestrations, of which the one by Roy Douglas is probably the most commonly performed).

Otherwise, you can't go far wrong with either of his Piano Concerti or his Cello Sonata, Op.65 in G minor, which is wonderful.

I've not thought of his music as film scores ... though, of course, numerous film scores do utilise selected works.

Chopin is one of the great melodists. But in addition, his music has great depth. Every classical pianist has to get acquainted with him very personally.

How can you not like Chopin?

It's not that difficult really. I like baroque--Bach, Albinoni etc--then musical fashion loses me until we get into the 20th Century. How can I not like Chopin? How can anyone not like Rozsa, E. Bernstein, Goldsmith etc is a more pertinent question for me.

I've gotta be honest.
I only buy his LP's for the covers.
That one with the obese fella drinking water from the hose!! THAT'S my favourite one. Symphony # 2 I think.

Symphony # 2 I think.

Chopin wrote symphonies? I've heard only his piano music.

Everybody loves Chopin. The people who claim they don't are just pulling our legs. ;-)

"Chopin wrote symphonies? I've heard only his piano music"
----------------------
Yeah, he only wrote one, and called it #2 for some crazy reason (that Chopes - as his mates called him - was a crazy old cat).
It's only available on el-pee and it's a limited edition.
But that cover!
Wow!
Say Jim, that's a BAD OUT FIT!

Really? Chopin composed a symphony? Never heard of that ever. I sincerely think you may be mistaken.
I know he composed a lot of solo piano music and two piano concertos, but I never heard of a symphony. Do you have any reference to the LP recording or any more information on that?

I was going to ask the same question.

Btw the UK Dutton Vocalion label recently issued a new recording of Balakirev's re-orchestration of Chopin's first Piano Concerto. Perhaps not better than the original orchestration but simply beautiful.

Berlioz once wrote about Chopin, that after playing a piece, he had for mania to make slide quickly his hand on the piano from left to right "as to erase the dream which he had just created".

The difficulty about Chopin is to find good interprets who can reproduce those dreams...

Some hints... Lipatti for the Waltzes (I know it's old... but honestly, no one can play those waltz the good way except him) and of course Pires for the Nocturnes (even if I like the Arrau ones too, even it's it maybe a bit too "romantic" for Chopin).

Sorry. What I meant to say was: "It's not that difficult really. Fred Bloggs likes baroque--Bach, Albinoni etc--then musical fashion loses Fred until we get into the 20th Century. How can Fred not like Chopin? How can anyone not like Rozsa, E. Bernstein, Goldsmith etc is a more pertinent question for Fred."

Chopin never wrote a symphony. All of his orchestral works are for piano and orchestra -- two concertos and a few smaller pieces.

I don't think Chopin ever felt comfortable around the orchestra. He only used it when it highlighted the piano as a solo instrument.
