Primarily based on performance and enjoyment, not completeness or faithfulness to film tempos:

King Kong - F. Steiner or Stromberg?
The Adventures of Robin Hood - Stromberg or Kojian?
Rebecca - McNeely or Stromberg?
Farenheit 451 - Stromberg or McNeely?
North by Northwest - McNeely or Johnson?
The Thief of Bagdad - Raine or Bernstein?
Torn Curtain - McNeely or Bernstein?
To Kill a Mockingbird - Bernstein or Bernstein or Bernstein? wink

Any others I may have forgotten?

The Adventures of Robin Hood -Kojian
Farenheit 451 - Stromberg
North by Northwest - Johnson (more edge to the performance)
The Thief of Bagdad - Raine (smoother, but this time in the good way)
Torn Curtain - Bernstein (McNeely's was smoother in the bad way imo)
Red River: Stromberg

I like the Naxos "Rebecca".

For the ones I have got...

King Kong. A tough one! Stromberg by a whisker(the poor sound). Crank it up and its ok.
Robin Hood. Stromberg by a whisker.
North by Northwest. McNeely.
Thief of Bagdad. Easy. Raine by a mile.

King Kong - Stromberg
The Adventures of Robin Hood - Kojian
Rebecca - McNeely (Stromberg never recorded this one, Adriano did, sleepily)
Farenheit 451 - Stromberg
North by Northwest - McNeely (by a kajillion miles)
The Thief of Bagdad - Raine
Torn Curtain - McNeely (but I know I'm in the minority on that one)
To Kill a Mockingbird - the Bernstein Film Music Collection is my favorite

Another couple...
Ben Hur - FSM or Tadlow? On your criteria above, Tadlow by a mile.
The Jungle Book - Seibel(Colosseum) or Gamba(Chandos)? Seibel by a small amount.

Do you mean the Complete Ben Hur? I LOVE the Tadlow, but the FSM definitely has an honoured place in my collection. Granted, one has to be a total cuckoo over that score to have so much of it...I am. smile

Yes, the box set that is a bookend smile

I find the Tadlow a much more succinct enjoyable listening experience. If I want all the ins and outs and nobs and whistles then the FSM definitely.

Completely understandable. I take out the Complete Collection (FSM) as regularly as the (awesome) Tadlow; for one reason because I get to hear the other performances, which I love because of the different perspectives.

It would be hard to turn down the Tadlow on a desert island, though. The sound alone is just SO good, and those folks sound like they're playing with their hearts. It's technically consistently excellent as well.

Aw heck I could rave about those two releases all the yee haw day lol!

MASADA....much bigger than the original.

I so wish that CD wasn't so expensive. Yavar told me it's a terrific score.

I feel dumb I didn't think of that. I do have a nice system and vinyl collection. I might have gotten too used to CDs, probably time to change that so I don't miss out on great music.

Now here's a tough one. (This is not strictly comparing rerecordings.)

I was looking through my collection when I spotted the Prometheus 2CD The 7th Voyage of Sinbad and the Varèse Debney rerecording. I am having a tough time placing an atom-thick wire between them, particularly when comparing CD1 of the former with the Debney. Any thoughts when using the original criteria posted above?

Batman — Elfman. The recording of the original music is horrendous.

As for new recording just for music release, there's a couple of favorites.

Magnificent Seven by James Sedaris and the Phoenix Symphony. It has an obvious concert arrangement approach, but in this case it means that there's more focus on the motives and instrumentation itself, rather than the atmosphere. Exhilarating stuff.

The Artist who did not want to paint conducted by Goldsmith himself. Stunning. Breathtakingly pretty and overwhelmingly beautifull. Passionate recording by the LSO.

Battlestar Galactica. Stu Phillips himself was amazed by the energy the players of RSNO go out of this music. Considering the awesomeness Phillips music already has, that's quite a feat. Phillips is right, to state the obvious. I love the box-sets Intrada has got out, but this new recording is marvelous.

Hmmm, really grabs the attention of this Jerry-head.

Thanks to all for the replies so far.

On The Thief of Bagdad, I briefly sampled the Seibel and the Bernstein (the Tadlow is not available to me) and it seems that they cover different music (at least based on the track titles), so could they be considered complimentary to one another?

In the case of Ben Hur, I'll be holding out for the Tadlow as all the other re-recordings are archival in sound quality (I already own the Rhino "long book").

Johnbijl, how does the Sedares Mag 7 compare to the RSNO (which I already own)?

As for Masada and The Artist Who Refused To Paint, I already own the original (Masada) and the re-recording (which is brilliant, both in performance and sound, along with that fantastic recording of Rio Conchos, which blows the OST out of the water).

Michael469, I've sampled bits of 7th Voyage (Debney) and it sounds good to my ears. I used to own that ancient Varese CD of the OST and just couldn't deal with the archival sound quality, although of course the music itself is fantastic.

There's nothing archival-sounding about the excellent Decca re-recording (National Philharmonic/Rozsa).

To me the Ben Hur Complete Collection's first two discs are mandatory if you really love the score, because imo FSM hit a total home run with the sound. The other discs have other performances that can really both deepen your appreciation, plus get a chance to hear the individual interpretations. To me it's a gold mine, and yes I'm aware of the price. Worth it, completely imo.

The Tadlow is terrific, wouldn't part with it, but I guess it's just up to how much BH as a piece of music inspires you. Both essential in my collection...in my life (it's that big a score to me).
