John Williams for The Last Jedi -- it's been nearly 25 years since his last Oscar win for Schindler's List, and while you could easily make the case that he's clearly deserved to win multiple times since then, The Last Jedi ain't it.
Sure, it's got the great John Williams sound and there are a handful of wonderful moments, but has there been a more cut-and-paste score in memory? All of us who know the concert arrangements of many of his best SW themes heard them in the movie in a very heavy-handed, note-for-note way. In the past, JW has been a master at organically weaving these themes into the underscore. Not so in The Last Jedi.
So to me it's a big upset if the voters finally award him a 6th Oscar for the cut-and-paste mish-mash of The Last Jedi. The Force Awakens' score was actually deserving of the Oscar given the new themes he wrote and how well it worked in the film. But then again (against the respective competition) so was War Horse, Memoirs of a Geisha, A.I., and Harry Potter (for either Prisoner of Azkaban or Sorcerer's Stone).

I suspect The Post might have been 6th. I'm not familiar with the Johnny Greenwood score but of the rest, I'd be OK with any of them winning though my choice would be 'The Shape Of Water' followed by Dunkirk. Carter Burwell deserves an Oscar for fine work over 3 decades but I suspect this won't be his year. John Williams is of course a legendary figure in scoring and it would be wonderful to see him win yet again at the age of 85. Would have preferred The Post to be nominated though.
