None of them before THE SEARCH FOR SPOCK, which I steadfastly argue is both a better film and score than the also-great WRATH OF KHAN.

I'm with you, though we are certainly in the minority. smile

In the Top Ten lists that have shown up in this thread, I find it hard to believe that no one has mentioned BRAINSTORM.

I certainly would, but man that record Devastates me, big time. Certainly one of his best works, but its a break glass for emergency listen - I wonder if anyone else feels that way with certain scores & this one in particular? I try & appreciate it on a composition level, but by the end of side one, er, track 2, I'm wrecked.

I'm forgetting the cue title, but the exquisite music for the tape playback, with the love theme, is one of the most sublime things Horner ever wrote. It set me to thinking at the time that he was destined to become the great film composer everyone appears to think he was. For my part, as much as I admire his better works, I was eventually forced to revise my opinion.

Was never a big fan of WRATH.

But adore both TITANIC and THE ROCKETEER. Both are top 10 contenders, but if I had to choose, I'd go for TITANIC.

I agree with you guys. Star Trek 3 is a better movie AND score.

I do think some things are better about Star Trek II...it's better written and directed, in some ways. Nicholas Meyer did a great job. I think the heights of II are perhaps greater than III -- Kirk's Explosive Reply, Spock's Death (I'm with Nick Meyer: sadly undercut by his return in the sequel, though the TOS cast doing so many more movies without Spock...) I also far prefer Kirstie Alley to Robin Curtis as Saavik, and wish she had stayed.

But then III treats the supporting cast much better; there's a greater sense of camaraderie and I love how they all band together and play a part in defiance of orders to go rescue Spock. Stealing the Enterprise is just incredible. Christopher Lloyd is underrated as a villain, IMO. David's murder was highly upsetting to me as a kid, and Shatner's stunned response as Kirk was well done. The destruction of the Enterprise, another great moment. "Bones...what have I done?" Yeah, Star Trek III is a highly underrated movie and I personally prefer it. And Horner's score is much deeper and better developed overall than his first, excellent as it is. With some exceptions (Genesis Countdown, Spock's Death), much of that was scoring surface action/suspense (excellently) whereas more of III is scoring characters' emotions and deeper themes. At least that's how it feels to me.

I suppose it comes down to the aspect(s) of a Trek film you really enjoy. To me there are 3 great "Trek" films, No. 2 (Wrath of Khan), No. 6 (The Undiscovered Country) and No. 8 (First Contact). I enjoy these the most because they are very well scripted and the directing is very taut (the third film drags a bit for me when compared with WOK).
