Okay, What Dreams May Come. A beautiful Morricone score which apparently didn’t make the cut because it was too overwhelming.
Jarre's "The River Wild" has some interesting moments. Certainly far more than the workmanlike Goldsmith score that replaced it. But while I'm talking about Goldsmith, I quite like his Timeline rejected score.
of course Hermmann's Torn Curtain is exceptional, I am also very fond of what little is left of Henry Mancini's Frenzy..both Hitchcocks interestingly..
Craig Safan's Wolfen, unused because the film was heavily re-cut, the score no longer matched up, and Safan - iirc - was no longer available.
Although it bears surface similarities to the Horner score, in terms of mood and scope, it takes a very different approach, from an atonal perspective, and succeeds, at least as a stand-alone listen, every bit as much as Horner's harmonies.

Michael Nyman - PRACTICAL MAGIC - 1998 In my top 5 favorite scores ever, possibly my single favorite score ever. There are a few cues from the actual rejected film score to be found on YouTube:
Beware, the "complete" score on YouTube doesn't appear to be any such thing, it only contains 23 tracks, when there should be 48, and some of the tracks on YouTube are not from Nyman's score.
Nyman also conducted two orchestral suites for the first pressing of the soundtrack album. The album was quickly recalled and repressed with two tracks from Silvestri. The album tracks have very different orchestration from the film cues. This album track is my single favorite film score track ever:

A great score. Agree with all of the above plus I would suggest K2 - Zimmer (partially rejected and his only one thus far?) The Wolfman - Elfamn (initially rejected in favor of a score by Haslinger - which in turn was rejected for Elfman's score. Is this the only time it happened? The Beyondness of Things - Barry (OK I'm stretching it with this suggestion, however it was rumored that part of Barry's rejected score for The Horse Whisper ended up on that album). Oldboy -Nyman (Demos were rejected and later wound up on a classical album?)

Wasn't the majority of Poledouris' score used over the replacement one written by Zimmer?
Could be. I don't have the liner notes, and it's been ages since I saw the movie. I know much of Poledouris' music ended up in the movie, but I thought it was a more even balance. For the record -- while I like Poledouris' effort -- I prefer the Zimmer more.
I would have loved to hear Gary Chang's rejected Point Of No Return from 1993. Clearly a bad memory as he didn't want to talk about it in my interview with him.
By the way, I recommend the great book Torn Music.
