I've seen some pretty good ones, but am even more curious as to whether there are any fellow horror buffs or just anyone with some input! smile

It's not a favorite modern genre of mine. I'm stuck in the 1960s and 1970s. The only one I saw last year would be IT. But I liked it. (I never saw the TV version.)

Sometimes, the line between 'thriller' and 'horror' is blurry. But from looking at my list, I could mention these. I've put the borderline cases in parenthesis:

(1. Elle)
(2. Alien: Covenant)
(3. Split)
(4. Thelma)
5. The Autopsy of Jane Doe
6. Get Out
(7. Resident Evil: The Final Chapter)
8. Creep 2
9. It Comes at Night
(10. Prevenge)
(11. Gerald's Game)
12. Before I Wake
13. It: Chapter One
(14. The Vault)
(15. The Untamed)
(16. Life)

The remaining horrors that I saw last year (that were also from 2017), I wouldn't recommend: DEATH NOTE, 47 METERS DOWN, THE LURE, MOTHER, TEMPLE

But I also saw some good ones that were NOT from 2017.

I've seen Creep 2 and Gerald's Game and It Comes At Night, all of which were pretty darn good. You've given me ideas for searching out, thanks Thor!

Yeah, I loved the first CREEP, but I thought the second was even better!

And that Mike Flanagan...I've liked pretty much everything he's done! He's on track to be the new big horror auteur, I think (especially if he lands that DOCTOR SLEEP gig that was in the news recently).

Everyone is now raving about that HEREDITARY horror film (it caused a ruckus at Sundance). Can't wait to see it, and if it's "all that".

That would be cool. You, me , and my s.o are all in agreement: as good as the first Creep was, 2 is better. But I'll be watching them both again soon smile

Since nobody seems to agree on what year a film is from anymore, I'll wing it:

Beyond the better known release like Get Out and Gerald's Game:

A Dark Song (Liam Gavin) is simply excellent.
Thelma, Joachim Trier's (Oslo, August 31) supernatural drama is also very good.
Super Dark Times (Kevin Phillips) is an excellent 90s throwback
I guess February (aka The Blackcoat's Daughter) by Oz Perkins didn't get a US release until 2017. Also really good.
The Devil's Candy (Sean Byrne)

I am a big horror fan. I have only seen a few 2017 horror film releases. It: Chapter 1 was by far my favorite. Get Out is also quite good. I also enjoyed 1922 (fourth Stephen King adaptation of 2017).

Despite the many positive reviews I didn't care for Gerald's Game. It was very well made and well acted, but I found it more disturbing (and not in a good way) than horrific, and the twist at the end just didn't work. Having Henry Thomas (Elliot from ET) playing the creepy dad didn't help.

If you're a big horror fan, you gotta keep up-to-date with new productions, Michael! Not just dwell on the past. smile

I forgot one on my earlier list: PIRMDZIMATIS [FIRST BORN] -- which is a decent Latvian take on ROSEMBARY'S BABY (sort of). Also forgot WITHIN and DEMON BOX, both also pretty good.

Other horror films I saw in 2017 that were produced earlier:

Pretty good:

THE BLACKCOAT'S DAUGHTER (2015)
GENERATION Z (2015)
I AM THE PRETTY THING THAT LIVES IN THE HOUSE (2016)
THE MONSTER (2016)

Somewhat disappointing, but watchable:

WOLVES AT THE DOOR (2016)
P2 (2007)
QUARANTINE 2: TERMINAL (2011)
THE AWAKENING (2011)
WOULD YOU RATHER (2012)
THE PRESENCE (2015)
POSSESSION (1981)
DON'T KNOCK TWICE (2016)
INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 3 (2015)
BLAIR WITCH (2016)

Really bad, and avoidable:

SATANIC (2015)
INCARNATE (2015)

Jeepers Creepers 3 - any good anyone?

Pity I don't see anyone talking about HAPPY DEATH DAY. Wasn't on the level of IT or GET OUT, but I found it a neat mix of GROUNDHOG DAY and a slasher movie. Good work by Jessica Rothe.

It's on my list of films to see. I see it's on Netflix.

The second one was just plain, unself-conscious fun, the first a minor classic imo. Will check out the 3rd.

I'm curious as to Annabelle's sequel, I liked the first one (too bad Bishara isn't scoring it).

I obviously need to check out Get Out.

A warning to Anyone who is considering including, or has already included, IT; I have a special set of skills and I will hunt you down and kill you!

You know...to me that book was during King's decline and I thought the same of the original movie. So I never even saw the remake...didn't thing the original was any good.

And I am a HUGE fan of King from the early 70s up to and including Pet Sematary (that last might be his masterpiece).

Am I to assume you didn't care for it? smile

It's not a good film, but it's not a bad film either. It's fairly middle-of-the-road, IMO.

Do any of these films sport the following credit: music by Christopher Young?

Nope. Last Young horror score was DELIVER US FROM EVIL in 2014.
