THANG?

I'm not even watching it, but I'm just curious as to how many here are buying and liking it?

I'm a Kirk, Spock and McCoy diehard fan. Don't buy the J.J. stuff.

What are your thoughts on what they're doing with DISCOVERY and STAR TREK in general?

Thanks.

I watched the first "Free" episode and never looked again. Certainly not paying for more JJ looking dreck.

I'm loving the whole series. You can see the money spent on the screen.
I'm so glad that they haven't slave-ishly allowed the 60's iteration dictate the look of the series.
It's modern Trek for a modern era! wink wink big grin

I always hated Klingons in any of the Trek's, but in this version they are much more interesting and look and feel alien.

I think you do yourself a dis-service, if you like sci-fi at all, to not check it out. Forget the old Trek - especially the 60's Trek and approach it with an open mind. Stop looking for the comparisons, take it for what it is and enjoy it.

The first episode really isn't the best episode to gauge the whole series.

The mirror universe story has been top notch and the visuals just stunning. I love the whole look and feel of the "evil empire".

Only thing I'm not sold on is the new drive system - I'm guessing that it will probably be dropped to align with the standard Trek model.

I am absolutely loving the show, it's moving at a great pace and the storytelling is smart. The mirror universe episodes have been the best of the series so far, and I cannot wait to see what happens next.

If you're not watching, you're missing out. It's the most engaging Trek since Enterprise's Season 3 Xindi war.

The cast is exceptional.

- I'm loving the whole series. You can see the money spent on the screen.

It's a darn pity you can't see that money spent on the written page.

- I'm so glad that they haven't slave-ishly allowed the 60's iteration dictate the look of the series. It's modern Trek for a modern era! wink wink big grin

Because blatantly disregarding the art style of one show is infinitely better than honoring the work that was previously done.

- I always hated Klingons in any of the Trek's, but in this version they are much more interesting and look and feel alien.

Why not go a step further and say you hated everything Star Trek from any era? Makes about as much sense since Klingons have gone through several different depictions.

- I think you do yourself a dis-service, if you like sci-fi at all, to not check it out. Forget the old Trek - especially the 60's Trek and approach it with an open mind. Stop looking for the comparisons, take it for what it is and enjoy it.

What it is is something I cannot in all my ability say works well with the rest of Star Trek. The NX-01 all the way to the Constitution Class didn't have windows for viewscreens, but now we're supposed to accept that it has always been the case? What about those iconic likes like 'On screen' or when the view screens don't work like in The Wrath of Khan?

- The first episode really isn't the best episode to gauge the whole series.

I think it's the perfect episode to gauge the whole series with. Lead character does something incredibly stupid and continues to do stupid things throughout the rest of the show. Seriously, this bit actually happens in an episode.

Burnham says we must capture the Klingon leader and not kill him because to Klingons, being captured is shameful. So Burnham and the Captain beam over, Captain gets fatally stabbed by the Klingon leader, and Burnham literally sets her phaser from stun to kill and murders him with an angry look on her face. There are characters who make hard decisions, and there are characters who are Burnham. They do the exact opposite of what they say they should do because the writers think that's dramatic.

It also doesn't help the fact that later on, she professes to the Klingons that she just wants to talk with them and seconds later initiates melee combat with them that leads to every single one of the Klingons getting killed. Nice to know our character has such depth that she'll go from peaceful intentions to full on hostile in the span of 10 seconds.

- Only thing I'm not sold on is the new drive system - I'm guessing that it will probably be dropped to align with the standard Trek model.

WHAT?! Star Trek Discovery should align with the standard Trek model? Come on man! Where's the 'MODERN STAR TREK' that you've been praising this series for? Don't go soft on it now!

Still, I'm glad that's a bigger problem for you instead of something like, I don't know. Burying your gays?

I just cannot believe the show runners thought they could get away with this. We have what can be argued as Star Trek's first bona fide gay couple and just when we're at the half-way point through the first season, they kill off one of them off. *snap* Like that. But don't worry! The show runners and even the actor said that this character isn't through yet. He'll come back. And guess what? He does!!!! And what does he do now that we get to see him again?

REMIND EVERYONE THAT HE'S DEAD.

But don't worry. At least we know that the hetero couple in the form of Tyler and Burnham will prosper despite the murdering tendencies of both characters.

.....Discovery is dumb. It doesn't compliment the franchise as a whole and introduces way too many conflicts with the lore for it to be compatible with anything else. You can't have Klingons ramming Starfleet ships with full on cloaking technology and have Spock tell Kirk 10 years later that cloaking technology is 'theoretically possible'.

I was reading recently that the show is called ST: Disco. It seems others have decided that the aesthetics of the show are a little over the top. Personally, I would like to see them tone down the visuals lest it becomes like Flash Gordon.

Klingons are well realised and the writing is ok IMO.
