So here's a legit business-end question for the labels...

LLL has teased a set coming out in which 100% of the proceeds will be donated to a special charity. So is that as simple as it sounds? Meaning LLL is saying they will make zero money on this release?

I would think that with all of the overhead costs for one of their releases it would be tough to do that, unless they're doing so well that they can write one off. I'm not at all knowledgeable enough about the business side of their releases, but as a small business owner I found it eyebrow-raising that they're not saying a PORTION of the proceeds, but the full 100%.

In any case, it sounds like a great gesture... I am just curious about how that would work for them business-wise.

I can't speak from the labels, but I suspect this could be a monumental headache to arrange, given the licensing fees, manufacturing costs, mastering costs, legal costs, various costs for musicians etc., not to mention artwork clearances etc. from studios and actors presented in the artwork.

I suspect this currently unnamed release will be an amazing effort for everyone involved.

Well, if it helps a relationship (a prominent composer, producer, studio, executive, whomever) and doesn't lose them any money, it's worth it.

I don't mean to suggest it's a mercenary endeavor. The charity may well be near and dear to the folks at LLL, too.

Unless the copyright holder is in on the donations part, I don't think it's a hassle at all. LLL could give a hundred percent of the proceeds to anyone they wish, assuming they paid all licensor's up front for the right to produce and sell the product.

My first reaction was to think the unnamed charity would be related to the recent California wildfires.

I thought the same. Which would obviously be near and dear to MV.

To answer your question, yes 100% of this upcoming release will be donated to United Way of Ventura County Thomas Fire Fund. The cd will cost $15. We are just waiting for the studio to wave all of their royalties on this release (the composer has already done so. He is even paying the mastering bill, we will be handling the printing and manufacturing bills out of pocket).

We hope to have it out in February, just waiting on the red tape.

Thanks for the answer... It's a nice thing that all parties involved are stepping up and contributing/waiving to make this kind of charitable project work. Looking forward to seeing what the title is! Good luck with it... I hope it's a successful project.
