Of course not that kind of winner like Vol. I, but nevertheless nice episodes have been borne in mind. A fine late X-mas gift. Bought!

There's the original "Star Trek" series from the 1960's that ran three seasons. As I recall, fans are torn on the lack-luster final season. You've been warned about "Spock's Brain" -- watch at your own peril.
There's "Star Trek: The Next Generation" from the 1980's/1990's, the first sequel. It doesn't start getting good until them idle of the second season. Season three is where it takes off. You've been warned about "Code of Honor" -- watch at your own peril.
Then there was "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine", the first show to neither take place on an Enterprise, or traveling ship, but rather a seized alien space station. People are torn on the series; some like it, others don't. Like Voyager, there are episodes to enjoy, plus it also has some of the various series most memorable scenes, but I won't spoil those here.
Then there was "Star Trek: Voyager". Again, no Enterprise. Can't say I'd recommend it. There are episodes to enjoy from it, though.
Then there was the terrible pre-quell series "Enterprise" that failed to use Scott Bakula to his full potential, used a song for the theme music, pissed people off in general (especially that finale), didn't last as long as the previous spin-off series did), and in an attempt to save itself re-branded "Star Trek: Enterprise". Hahaha, too late.
Then last year after about a decade or so of no Trek shows, they decided to give us the awful "Star Trek: Discovery".

Yes and No.
The first series (TOS) took place in the 23rd century.
TNG takes place in the 24th century, after the events of the TOS films.
D.S.9. takes place during TNG and then after when TNG has ended. You'll probably have to consult Trek-sperts on whether you need to watch them together and in what viewing orders. There's some TNG cameos and two characters from TNG go to this show.
Voyager you technically only need to watch some episodes of the first two series, just so you know what the hell is going on. But keep in the mind the writer's -- even with the wealth of the internet at their hands and Trek books, still forgot things and changed things already established as canon; they just didn't seem to care.
Enterprise you technically don't need to really see anything prior. If you enjoy TNG at all, do yourself a favor and don't watch the insult that was the Enterprise series finale; they actually had the nerve to ... oh, never mind.
Discovery, technically you don't need to watch anything prior. Especially since like the Voyager writers, they do what ever the fuck they want and change things drastically. Your time is better spent watching "Seaquest". Just saying.

I'm really happy we're getting this, but hoping we'll also get explanations from Lukas or FSM about the choices made and what might still be included on the final set. There's a lot missing from the thread where we made requests, so I'd like to know more about what was chosen and why (especially regarding Sacrifice of Angels, which was a popular request).

acathla, I've been a Trek fan since I was six. The nice thing about Trek is that it's (mostly) episodic. Therefore what I would strongly recommend is this:
1. Look up a "Top 10" list for the original Star Trek series (or go to IMDb.com and see the highest rated episodes). Watch those. If you're enjoying yourself, try a few more. When you get bored, move on to the original Star Trek films (feel free to skip the first as it's very slow moving, a lot of people dislike it, and it's never referenced story-wise afterwards -- I originally found it boring but I've grown to appreciate it for its many strengths, one of which is the incredible score by Jerry Goldsmith). Those six original Trek films are among my favorite Star Trek. Yes, even the odd-numbered ones.
2. Try The Next Generation -- for this I would say actually *do not* skip the first two seasons, though they are weaker in a lot of ways. But I actually rewatched them recently and there are a fair number of highlights. IMDb.com is actually fairly accurate on which episodes are good, ie. Arsenal of Freedom. And you should probably also watch the pilot episode (even though it's not very good, it sets up a main antagonist) and Hide and Q (second episode with that entertaining antagonist, even though it's not that great). The first two seasons, while a bit rougher, also have more inventive directing and especially better music than you tend to get later on in the show. One more tip: a lot of people tend to dump on Skin of Evil because of hokey special effects and something that happens, but honestly I'd always avoided seeing that one so when I watched it going through the series again, I was shocked to find that it honestly moved me.
Then seasons 3-5 are the strongest of TNG, but even then there are many so-so episodes you can safely skip (IMDb is a safe guide; don't bother with episodes below a 7.0 in general). Seasons 6 & 7 are weaker in general but have some very good episodes still, particularly the great series finale, All Good Things...
3. If you want to watch things "in order" then the first modern Trek spinoff, Deep Space Nine, starts during season 6 of TNG. For me it is by far the strongest Trek show, but it too takes a couple seasons to really get going. There are some truly great episodes in season one though, and unlike other Treks this one is actually fairly arc-based, so after the first season or so you shouldn't be skipping (m)any episodes. I think this is the one you are most likely to get into as a Buffy fan, to be honest. Important in some ways to see highlights of TNG first though, because two characters carry over from that show.
4. Unless you're a really big fan (and maybe even if you are), don't bother with Voyager or Enterprise (or Discovery, IMO). There's some good stuff but there's so much bad. If you're really curious look up some "Top 10" lists.

A BIT OFF TOPIC
I've been thinking about actually start to watch Star Trek for while now...
If you want another opinion. Here it is.
What I can definitely say is TREK TV series—with the exception of TOS and DISCOVERY—have always had problems starting off. If you have patience, I’d say, watch them in the order they were produced. That would be:
TOS
TNG
DS9
VOYAGER
ENTERPRISE
DISCOVERY.
If you can’t and don’t watch a lot of TV and you wanted to pick just one TREK series, I’d say pick DS9. Once it found it’s legs, it was the best, most consistent TREK series ever. It lacked the adventure of the other TREK series because it wasn’t on a star-ship, but it produced great characters—both major and minor; had the best antagonist; was more realistic (at least until DISCOVERY); and did a great job of mixing stand alone stories, and stories with short and long story arcs.
Yes, start with TOS, but if you don’t feel enamored with TREK on television after you start watching, I would suggest you watch them based on their best seasons. Here are my suggestions with short comments about each:
TOS—Seasons 1, 2—
TOS was the foundation of STAR TREK and when it worked, it told the best stories ever in TREK’s canon. Gene Roddenberry left the series after season 2 and it showed. Season 3 stories were too melodramatic and the series budget was cut considerably as can be seen in most of season 3 episodes. Some shows didn’t even have full sets built and backdrops had no lighting and were filmed in the dark.
TNG—Seasons 3, 4, 5, 6—
TNG produced some great classic episodes and told the most well-rounded stories of any TREK series. By season 3, it found it’s way and is my 3rd favorite TREK TV series. The first few seasons just re-threaded TOS stories, and produced some awful episodes. In later seasons, the shows lack of high drama—very little conflict among the main cast—and technobabble, made the show, good, but not exceptional.
DS9—Seasons 2, 4, 5, 6, 7
In my opinion, DS9 was the best TREK TV series. It didn’t start out that way and it’s understandable why. It took TREK in a completely new direction—a stationary series. It’s early stories just rehashed TNG episodes. At the end of season 1, two great episodes appeared: In the Hands of the Prophets and Duet, and right there you could see a great series forming. This continued throughout season 2, then season 3 happened. The creators were rebuilding the series and it was like starting over, unfortunately, they forgot to write engaging stories. Many of the stories were flat and the season was wildly inconsistent: one good episode, followed by one bad one. However, once they laid or relaid the new foundation in season 3, DS9 rocked! Four straight seasons of great TREK!
VOYAGER—Seasons 4, 5, 6
In a nutshell, VOYAGER was just a conceptional rehash of TNG, with a Lost in Space theme attached. It did little to find it’s own voice. Season 4 saw an improvement with the addition of Seven of Nine—one of the best female characters TREK has ever produced. Looking back, I’d have to say, if you don’t care about originality, great drama, and just want to be entertained, VOYAGER is for you. It’s easy to digest, and doesn’t affect you in the slightest, but it’s a mindless and fun show.
ENTERPRISE—Seasons 3, 4
After three STAR TREK series grounded on a star-ship, in too short a timeframe, I was sick to death of this concept. I still maintain, there was no need, other than greed, to do another one. Others obviously agreed since the show was cancelled after 4 seasons for declining ratings. That being said, I admired the producers daringness… looking for, and finding two new directions for TREK with ENTERPRISE: a season-long story arc for season 3—never before done on TREK, and doing short story arcs & recapturing and expanding the mythology of TOS in season 4. Whatever drawbacks ENTERPRISE had, those two seasons saved it from being utterly forgettable.
DISCOVERY—Season 1 (so far)
After a long departure, I welcomed another TREK series. I had hoped for a refreshing new direction, like DS9, and really didn't want yet another rehash of a TREK series on a star-ship. I didn’t get my wish, but we did get one that’s adult; very well produced; well acted; looks great, and has told good stories so far. It’s hard to get a handle on a series that has just started. I still don’t think this show holds a candle to DS9, especially the telling of it’s war story, but it’s gotten off to a better start than any TREK series—other than TOS. We shall see.
One other matter. At first, I was puzzled why fan reaction has been so negative toward DISCOVERY. Then, the latest STAR WARS movie, THE LAST JEDI was released, and now I'm left to wonder, could it be many fans just don’t like change, and want to envision themselves as the creators and producers? Is the only thing that matters to them: their own wants and desires translated to the screen? If true, may I say that’s not the job of producers and writers. It never has been and it shouldn’t be. I did not want another star-ship based TREK series, but I didn’t get angry and judge the product based on what I wanted. I’ll enjoy DISCOVERY for what it is and hope that in the future TREK will take a chance and do something really inventive, like DS9. We can only hope.

I assume it's the source file... and it's probably too late but has anyone noticed the "R" in Trek is distorted? Volume 1 looks the same way and I didn't even notice till it was pointed out to me relatively recently.
On Facebook, designer Mark Banning confirms that the logo is from the official file from the press kit, so they had no control over it. (I think it may be the weird faux-dimensional "lighting" that makes the "R" appear wrong. I can't imagine that it's not geometrically the same "R" in "STAR" and "TREK." But visually – which is all that matters – it sure seems weird.)
If you zoom in, you'll see that the two Rs do appear to be geometrically identical and it's only the shading inside the Rs that creates the visual difference. Look very closely at the lower part of the "hole" inside the upper part of the two Rs. That part of the second R is shader much darker.
Oh and I see the package comes with music inside too! I almost didn't notice with all this consternation over the Rs!
