TUESDAY, JANUARY 2

STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI---with the LAST JEDI grossing over $1 billion, which makes it the top grossing movie of 2017, Walt Disney Pictures has effectively earned back the $4.06 billion it paid to buy Lucasfilm from George Lucas.
The ten STAR WARS movies have grossed $8.55 billion which surpasses the eight HARRY POTTER movies which earned $8.53 billion.
Rian Johnson said Kylo Ren's comments about Rey's parents isn't necessarily definitive, "Anything’s still open, and I’m not writing the next film. [J.J. Abrams and Chris Terrio] are doing it. With all of these movies, Obi-Wan’s whole speech about a certain point of view always applies, so I think that you have to always think about the context of how information is given."
Also, Mark Hamill said his three children had cameos in THE LAST JEDI with Nathan, Griffin, and Chelsea playing Resistance members Saile Minnau, Salaka Kuchimba, and Koo Millham.

SUPERHERO MOVIES---Jodie Foster criticized big-budget movies including superhero movies, “Going to the movies has become like a theme park. Studios making bad content in order to appeal to the masses and shareholders is like fracking – you get the best return right now but you wreck the earth. It’s ruining the viewing habits of the American population and then ultimately the rest of the world. I don’t want to make $200 million movies about superheroes.”
James Gunn replied to Foster's criticism, “I think Foster looks at film in an old-fashioned way where spectacle film can’t be thought-provoking. It’s often true but not always. Her belief system is pretty common and isn’t totally without basis. I say not without basis because most studio franchise films are quite soulless – and that is a real danger to the future of movies. But there are also quite a few exceptions.
For cinema to survive I believe spectacle films NEED to have a vision and heart they traditionally haven’t. And some of us are doing our best to move in that direction. Creating spectacle films that are innovative, humane, and thoughtful is what excites me about this job.
But, to be fair, at least from Foster’s quotes, she seems to see filmmaking as something that’s primarily about her own personal growth. For me, that may be part of why I do this, but spending many millions of dollars on a film has to be about more than that – it’s communication – so my experience is merely one spoke on that wheel. But I respect Foster and what she’s done for films and I appreciate her different way of looking at Hollywood’s landscape.”

JAMES BOND---Denis Villeneuve (ARRIVAL) explained why he declined to direct a James Bond movie in favor of DUNE, “I would love to [direct Bond]. I said to [producer] Barbara [Broccoli], I would love to work with you and with Daniel, but I’m engaged."
He added, "When Legendary offered me to do DUNE on a silver plate? Which was like my dream project that I’m dreaming to do for 30 years? I said yes right away. I want to honor that. It doesn’t mean the movie will happen, maybe in six months the movie will – and Bond is an old fantasy of mine, but I can’t be in two places at the same time. It’s a strange year because I would love to do a James Bond. I need to focus.”

THE WALKING DEAD---executive producer David Alpert commented on the declining ratings, “I don’t think in any way the brand has lost its relevance in general, I think we’re just seeing a decline in urgency across all media to consume something at a specific time.”

CLEOPATRA---co-writer David Scarpa (ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD) commented on the Sony Pictures biomovie, "… instead of doing the movie as the prestige picture — the three-hour, lots of pageantry, people with fans and English accents and all that stuff — [we] really treat it as a political thriller. Dirty, bloody, lots of people swearing and having sex and all of that other stuff and just treat it as a two-hour, lean, mean political thriller, full of assassinations, etc. Just going the opposite direction from the way we think that movie is going to go.”

MAD ABOUT YOU---Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt are in talks to return for a Sony Pictures Television limited-run sequel series. It would focus on Paul and Jamie coping with empty-nest syndrome after their daughter, Mabel, goes to college. The original series ran on NBC from 1992-1999.

USS CALLISTER---director Toby Haynes said a spinoff of the Netflix BLACK MIRROR episode might be in the future, "'I was talking with Louise Sutton, who produced this and “Metalhead,” and she cooked up a brilliant idea of spinning it off into a TV series. I’d love to do a TV series of “USS Callister” — it’s probably one of the best pilots for a space show, ever. And I made it! So I’m keen to see it as a TV series. I think Charlie might revisit it as a Black Mirror. Whether I’m the one to do it, I don’t know. Being a fan of the show as much as I am, and being a part of making it, I’d love to work with that crew and cast again. It’s a gift for a director.'"

THE X-FILES---Gillian Anderson confirmed the upcoming Season 11 will be her last season.

WHITE FAMOUS---Showtime cancelled the series.

POSE---new FX/Ryan Murphy series dance musical about New York in the 1980s with the largest transgender cast assembled.

TRIVIA---before George Takei was the helmsman for the starship Enterprise in STAR TREK, he was the helmsman for the Japanese destroyer Amagiri that rammed John F. Kennedy's PT boat in the 1963 JFK biomovie PT 109.
The 1963 movie starred Cliff Robertson, who won the Best Actor Oscar for CHARLY, and later starred in BRAINSTORM and the SPIDER-MAN trilogy. PT 109 also featured Robert Blake, of The Little Rascals fame and BARETTA, who was later found liable in a civil case for the murder of his wife.
A new PT 109 movie is underway.

Somehow I think Jodie Foster did not like "Guardians of Galaxy 2, Revenge of Star Trek V The Final Frontier, the Giant Marshmallow Returns", wow, that movie really sucked.

Jodie Foster's The Brave One, like Sleeping With The Enemy, went over that real world fine line scenario which separates what you would ideally like to do to obtain a sense of personal justice, no holds barred, compared to what the law is there to do on your behalf. In that sense it was more like fantasy. The earlier, The Accused, is more relevant today than just about any other movie - that was from 1988!

Jodie Foster is right to a point and I understand her frustration. It's really about the over-saturation of the mindless epic, the commercial product where each film is just a set up for the next film in the series. (MCU) There a place for good sci fi/Super Hero epics. Though few hold much value on an intellectual level. But quality smaller films are not being made or released in theaters, like Breaking Away, My Bodyguard, Lucas, etc.

I guess I'm a regular consumer, since I love superhero movies. I don't know, it seems like a great waste of time to me.

I know what you mean. I personally lose interest in a movie if it's not too action-packed.

I love Jodie Foster, but James Gunn's reply was spot on.

What other threads are these spammers posting on?

As I've said before, spammers are good in that they bring up old threads that people haven't seen or have been forgotten.

Good point!

Well you got "two" new members here and one in "Vendor, Marketplace Complaints / Nightmares" thread. Not sure what the point of it is. They don't link to potential viruses or are otherwise off topic.

Are any of us "real"?

I kind of think that's the problem.

I like all kinds of films, they can be slow or fast. They simply have to be engaging. I usually like superhero origin stories because they're the most important time in a characters life. When you get to the sequels its just a lot of excesses and I get bored, especially when it comes to non-stop action.

A story needs conflict/tension. That's it. It doesn't have to be action. I think the superhero genre has had its share of good films, but I also think it has become oversaturated. Actually I think the remake is even more so.

"I don’t want to make $200 million movies about superheroes." = "I haven't been asked to star in $200 million movies about superheroes."?
I know, I am so jaded and cynical!
C'mon, Ms. Foster, lighten up! Yes, she makes a point, but isn't it entertainment, after all?
Sure, to me, most all of these superhero movies with their over-the-top action all seem the same. The same plots, just interchangeable characters, but if it's something people are willing to pay to see, what's the big deal? Are these movies preventing you from making or starring in the movies you wish folks to see?

Funny thing, if she was younger and in her prime I could see her getting a gig in one of these superhero franchises. I don't think she would turn it down or complain if offered such a role.

If each of us learns how to apply and properly study it, everything in the content can be true. Together, let's build a thriving new world. Many thanks to the banks.

What??? No dodgy link to click?

This is new.

However - interesting to re-read comment about TLJ after so much time has passed.

I still hate it.
