Surprisingly (to me) it's Stanley & Iris. A delightful Williams score I was unfamiliar with but find myself playing fairly often.

More great titles this year...

  • Close Encounters of the Third Kind by John Williams (LLL)
  • ET The Extra-Terrestrial by John Williams (LLL)
  • Papillon by Jerry Goldsmith (Quartet)
  • Revenge of the Ninja by Robert Walsh (Varese)
  • The Russia House by Jerry Goldsmith (Quartet)
  • Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow by Edward Shearmur (LLL)
  • Stanley & Iris by John Williams (Varese)
  • Star Wars - The Last Jedi by John Williams (Disney)
  • Titanic by James Horner (LLL)
  • Under Siege 2 by Basil Poledouris (Varese)
  • Waterworld by James Newton Howard (LLL)

I'd say La-La Land is the label of the year (once again)

Many great ones have been mentioned (Sky Captain was a particularly wonderful surprise), but for me the release of the year is undoubtedly LLL's expanded Die Another Day.

Grand Razzie of the Year goes to Blade Runner 2049—not for the music, but for its Chernobyl of a release.

2017 was actually one of my less purchasing years since my collecting. Not saying anything bad
about the releases but I guess I am just trying to have more careful choosing for my tastes.
My favorites were E.T., Damnation Alley and Sodom and Gomorrah. Or was Sodom and Gomorrah released last year?

Sodom and Gomorrah was actually released two years ago. The big Tadlow releases this year were Duel in the Sun and Ben Hur.

As for newer film scores I know that is not something we are that happy to talk about, by Wonderstruck and Cello I think harken back to the day when movies had themes etc. CHECK these two great scores out.

Older scores released this year, my goodness I don't know, so many to choose from. I think the Franz Waxman box set is pretty darn incredible and La-La Lands Titanic and so many other great labels. Oh Twister by Mancina was a biggie for me.

Short list, off the top of my head and subject to revision if I think of others:

  • La Dolce Vita - Rota / Quartet
  • The Hustler - Kenyon Hopkins / Intrada
  • Thriller - Goldsmith / Tadlow

For me Ben Hur and Duel in the Sun tie for first then followed by The Waxman Collection.

Honorable mentions to Cecil Be De Mille American Epic and Lady Jane.

Not to be the odd man out or anything, but I'm going with both volumes of Charlie Clouser's Saw Anthology and his new Jigsaw score for the newest movie in the series, which was also released the same month.

In referring to your avatar, I think the Legacy Edition of Robin Hood deserves a mention as well...
