What the hell does boxing have to do with hi-fi?
Is this another one of those eccentric British traditions.

it has a lot to do with hi-fi.
because if you get your ears box in, then whats the point of buying a hi-fi?

it's really a bad understanding of boxing day.(after all I'm just yank from Texas via new york city)

But you make an excellent point...

[Watched Dunkirk in 4k last night - just as good as it was down the Everyman!

Tell me TG, does the 4K make the very modern buildings even more visible than they were when you saw it at the Everyman?

I've heard of Onkyo they have solid reviews when used solely for AV-set-up - you do know its not full hi-fi critique.

I chose to see them as Art Deco smile

To be honest, the novelty of the Onkyo hasn’t worn off, so I was concentrating more on the sound than the vision, with a few obvious exceptions ie every shot of the Spits.

I haven’t played a lot of music on it yet, but it dealt very nicely with Weinberg’s 12th and Sparks’s Hippopotamus on cd and Shostakovich’s 12th on the TiVo.

They’ll do as they’re told, Mitch.

(Yes, they were ALL out smile )

Ah, TG, you shook his hand ... but did you make Richer any richer?

Well, someone had to ask! I'm awaiting a replacement amp (pre-amp to replace an integrated amp) but haven't been given a delivery date yet.

Whatever you bought, TG, I hope it does all that wonderful music justice!

Mitch

Well, I'm now listening to some music via my replacement pre-amp ... and I'm pleased to say that it sounds good!!!

But, as usual, I didn't do enough research and so the set-up was a little more problematical than simply replacing one box with another ... frown ... despite same brand some of the interconnect cables don't fit. Instead of 3.5mm to 3.5mm jack I need 3.5mm jack to phono (for system automation); and instead of stereo phono to stereo phono I need stereo phono to 5pin DIN (for AV link-up).

Oh well. It's all about the sound and so far ... so wonderful. My first piece of music: John Barry's Main title from The Ipcress File (1965) ... I know it can sound better (upgrade speakers, living room, hearing ...) but for the moment this makes me a very happy listener.

Great choice of premiere, Mitch, but wait until you hear Dunkirk on it smile

Ah, I presume you mean watching the film on BluRay rather than listening to the score. If so, I have a dilemma (ignoring the fact that I'm unlikely to watch that film* ... at least until it's broadcast) because, in my wisdom, I've set up a very good AV system (albeit somewhat dated now) but a far better hi-fi system. So, when watching a BluRay, I have a choice: 5.1 surround AV sound ... or better 2.0 hi-fi sound?

Oh, the problems we face ...

Mitch

* I presume you mean the recent film, rather than the John Mills / Richard Attenborough 1958 film of the same name ... based on the novel by the author of Flight of the Phoenix (1965) and The Quiller Memorandum (1966)

How very interesting - I didn’t realise that Elleston Trevor was behind the novel. I was always a big fan of his Adam Hall Quiller books.

I only mentioned the new Dunkirk because of some people hating and fearing it - and it being very loud...
