Just very occasionally I actually wish I was fifteen years older than I am, just to have been able to appreciate the cool in that as it happened. Or is it only cool in retrospect? Did those cats really dig it at the time? They sure looked like they did.

No, that's McFarland. A bit kitschy, but it's also quite fun. Thanks for sharing.

Goldsmith could only dream of being even remotely as cool as Gary McFarland. wink

He likes to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony . . . but was stabbed in the back by a "drink me" potion. Let's not forget.

Don't mean to rain on parade. Facts are facts.

Terrific clip! I lingered long enough to watch the next video autoplay and apparently there is a "This Is Gary McFarland" documentary DVD that I was previously unaware of. I'll need to pick this up!

I personally have never heard of this McFarland chap until this thread. Sorry. Where have I been?

He kinda looked to me like a 70's Mephisto Waltz period Jerry G.

After googling, I see and understand. I was never that into jazz back then. Grusin I guess was my first. I didn't really know who any musicians or composers were until around 1968 when I was 11 years old and first started buying LP Movie Soundtracks in the cut out bins at Woolworth. It was at that time I first saw SPARTACUS on TV and was totally moved by Alex North's score. Boom! Hooked on film scores.

S'all good, man. It is just a little jarring to see the epitome of hip juxtaposed with an old man who wore his hair in a ponytail.

But in '66, Goldsmith I think was pretty hip. He got hipper when he let his hair grow after his shorter semi-mod look:

Buy McFarland’s Eye of the Devil on the FSM label and you’ll find a small tribute to the second-coolest guy in film music.

Sadly, McFarland did not live long enough to make any fashion choices inappropriate for an old man.

But regarding those young Goldsmith pix: An old guy with a ponytail could never have written the Flint scores.

BTW, McFarland released a version of the tune from the Fresca commercial under the title "Flea Market," on his LP "Does the Sun Really Shine on the Moon." Not sure offhand which came first.

I'm finding very strong musical similarity between the sung version of this in the original post, and Roxy Music's repeated chorus in 'Street Life'. I wonder if the influence was real .....?
