(Apologies if this has already been posted, I couldn't find it)

I assume this is another box set release from SONY with cardboard slip covers and no remastering. I struggle to see who this release is aimed at, as I imagine fans would have what looks like 10 single discs already and it's a bit pricey for the casual fan (at the moment anyway)...

It's actually a 20-CD set, consisting of all of his Sony Classical recordings with the Boston Pops, plus some other albums he made with the London Symphony and LA Orchestras.

This should be the full set:

1 Music of the Night (BPO)
2 Star Wars Trilogy (Skywalker Symphony)
3 The Spielberg/Williams Collaboration (BPO)
4 I Love a Parade (BPO)
5 The Green Album (BPO)
6 Joy to the World (BPO)
7 Night and Day (BPO)
8 Unforgettable (BPO)
9 Music for Stage and Screen (BPO)
10 It Don't Mean a Thing if it Ain't Got That Swing (BPO)
11 Williams on Williams (BPO)
12 Summon the Heroes (BPO)
13 The Five Sacred Trees album (London SO)
14 The Hollywood Sound (London SO)
15 Cinema Serenade (Itzhak Perlman, Pittsburgh SO)
16 Gershwin Fantasy (Joshua Bell, London SO)
17 Cinema Serenade 2 (Itzhak Perlman, BPO)
18 American Journey (Utah SO/ LA orchestra)
19 Yo-Yo Ma Plays The Music Of John Williams (LA orchestra)
20 The Spielberg/Williams Collaboration Part III (LA orchestra)

It's a great collection from top-to-bottom, but like you said, most Williams fans will probably have all or most of them already.

That makes a bit more sense, both content and price wise than the image on Amazon. It is a good collection, if that is the full set.

This forthcoming release is new to me ... despite me spending far more time than I should browsing Amazon's CD offerings!

As already stated many fans will have a number of these releases and, happily, I am one ... albeit I'm not a great fan of this Maestro's works. As part of building my music collection I have bought six of these albums (two of which I recall hearing years ago) and yet, none of them are so good that I want to play them other than sparingly. And for whichever tune is playing, if I have another recording, it is that one which I prefer.

There's nothing wrong with any of the recordings (though my late father disliked his take on the Big Band album Swing, Swing, Swing (1984)) and many of the arrangements/performances are nice ... just nothing special.

I may play Unforgettable (1992) or Night and Day (1993) this weekend whilst we entertain friends ... full of tunes we old-uns will know which are unobtrusive.

Perhaps at that price I wouldn't have been interested but, owning so many already, the collection will have to be significantly reduced in price for me to be tempted.

Mitch

Ah, I see that Swing, Swing, Swing is not a Sony album (it's Philips) so is not one of the 20

Yup. Have most of these (and those I don't have physically, I have digitally). So no-buy for me. The remaining I don't have, I prefer to buy individually. But these re-packaging deal have become all the norm these days.

This is par for the course for classical labels in recent years -- this one is reletively small compared to some of the ones Universal has been putting out.

I might be interested in this. I only have about 3 or 4 of these albums on CD, plus an equal number on cassette.

I see that the U.K. site of Amazon lists this collection as an import. What is its country of release?

I don't own a single one. Is the boxset worth it?

If you don't own a single one of these, I'd go so far as to say it's a MUST-HAVE!

The german amazon site says it is a german Sony product. And it is cheaper in www.amazon.de

That's a great gift, Henry, especially if you didn't already own any of the albums in the set.

I got my copy, it's fantastic! Is there a chance Williams Philips cds will be released in a box set too?

I assume those are cardboard cases, right?
Hmm. it will be easy to damage them (rip, crease) etc.

I still hope for an individual CD release of Spielberg-Williams Part III. Is it at all likely?

It's available as a download. Not good enough?

Last I saw the box set with something like $22 on Amazon which isn't all that much more than the cost of a single CD...

That's a good price. On Amazon UK, the price is generally closer to 30GBP, which is a bit expensive for wanting just the latest disc.

I saw this set at HMV during the week at £99, and at the moment Amazon UK has it at £100, which unless you don't own any of them is somewhat steep. That said it is a bit steep anyway considering how old some of the recordings are, and as someone has pointed out, in cardboard box to boot.
