In collaboration with Philippe Sarde and BMG, Music Box Records presents on a 2-CD set the complete collaboration between the composer and French director Laurent Heynemann, a former assistant for directors Bertrand Tavernier and Yves Boisset. Six films in a decade : Il faut tuer Birgitt Haas (Birgit Haas Must Be Killed, 1981), Stella (1983), Le Dernier Civil (The Last Civilian, 1985), Les mois d'avril sont meurtriers (April is a Murderous Month, 1987), Faux et Usage de faux (Forgery and the Use of Forgeries, 1990) and La Vieille qui marchait dans la mer (The Old Lady Who Walked in the Sea, 1991).

In this full anthology featuring complete scores and previously unreleased material, listeners will thus appreciate the diversity of themes and atmospheres - contemplative or colourful - through a demanding approach the composer never wants too obvious. Avoiding facility, the ethereal strings, the syncopated melodies or the jazzy nostalgic tones tend to elevate senses. Listeners will also have the pleasure to recognize the names that constantly appear throughout Philippe Sarde's career (Peter Knight, Bill Byers, Hubert Bougis, Howard Shelley, Warren Bernhardt, Stéphane Grappelli, Hubert Rostaing, William Flageollet, London Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris) proving once again that Philippe Sarde values trust and reliability.

The program has been assembled, produced and supervised by Édouard Dubois and the composer. The package includes a 16-page booklet featuring rare pictures of recording sessions, exclusive liner notes by writer Gérard Dastugue and new comments by Philippe Sarde and Laurent Heynemann on their 10-year partnership. Limited Edition of 500 units.

Wooooow! Incredible release. This is so ordered. I never could find the previous edition with far less tracks and a curious track-order for a decent price. Now look at this. So happy!

I second Couvee's words since my situation is exactly the same regarding the OOP previous CD! Congratulations to MBR for releasing their first Sarde album, and a double one that is! I'm also very much interested in the other CD by Reinhard Wagner, a premiere for MBR as well! These two titles make my day!

Interesting but any reason why Music Box almost exclusively cover the 80s? Selling argument? Master tapes availability? Owner preferences? Most of my requests are from the 50s, 60s, 70s, hence my question.

Because the 80s sell, and European music form the 50s, 60s, 70s don't. On the other side, I hope Music Box never change his time period preferences.

Excellent release by Phillippe Sarde, well worth having, by the way!

Really enjoying the samples, even though the movies are unknown to me. Always enjoy Sarde, and increasingly enjoy jazz-inflected music.

I received a message that this is already on it's way to me! What lightning fast service from Music Box, even ahead of the release date. I love this.

This arrived in the mail yesterday, and boy, do I like it. Disc one is a winner all through. In 'stellar' sound too dare I say. Disc two has some familiar themes re-worked in interesting new variations. L'adolescente is one of my favorite Sarde scores and for 'La vieille qui marchait dans la mer' he revisited that score but unlike 'Les égarés' this one is quite different, wonderful stuff. The set ends with the very bleak 'Le Dernier Civil' that may be the perfect accompaniment for a funeral in the rain. But who complains after all these great themes you heard on this very generous 2-disc set. The only really puzzling thing is that at only 500 copies and such a low price it hasn't sold out yet. Thanks a lot to all involved for this wonderful release.

Well, I am glad it hasn't sold out within a few days... smile

I won't be probably able to order it until early next year with Caldera's new Yared and still need to find two more titles to combine it with... although I can't wait to hear them both.

Great release, indeed, awaited for longtime.
Like many here, I wanted to purchase the previous Sarde/Heynemann CD. But now, we'll get much more stuff, for the film noir genre, as the black and yellow sleeve suggests (it hints at the "série noire" police book).
As with directors Tavernier, Boisset, Granier-Deferre (another CD, please!) and so on, the Sarde collaboration with Heynemann was very special and fruitful.

Thank you, Music Box, well done for your very first Sarde release!

I hadn't realised it was the first Sarde Music Box release. Hope it sells so that we get more Sarde!
