Well I did, and I'm not happy. I rarely if ever complain about anything on this board, but the horrendous packaging of this set is the worst ever. To begin with, the outer box which houses the whole set was damaged in shipping; creased on the vertical edge of the fold in box, and on the bottom of the outer box itself, which is coming apart. And that's not the worst of it. A slightly creased box I can live with, but it's the fact that every disc of the 8 have surface scratches to varying degrees. I'll have to make sure all play without any issues, but even if they do, they should not be scratched at all for a brand new product. It is the cardboard which houses each disc which is the culprit here. And don't nobody tell me that I shouldn't worry about the packaging and just be grateful that Varese released the set at all. Maybe if you receive your sets and the discs are scratched the way mine are, you'll feel the same as I do. Each disc should have been enclosed in its own separate plastic lined sleeve like the LP to CD set. Every disc in that set was scratch free in brand new condition. And don't tell me that this forum is not the place to air such a grievance, and that I should call Varese instead. Believe me, come Monday, that's exactly what I will do.

There are one or two users here who will still say this to you !!

Did you not know that Varese is all concept over quality now?

The scratched discs are inexcusable. It's Elm Street all over again! I love that they went to ridiculous levels to stop discs moving in transit when (as any sensible person knows) the damage will have already been done!

I'm putting my order on hold. I really can't be bothered with another Varese cock-up.

(Are the track listings correct?! lol)

For the price this should not have happened. For what is the oldest lable around, standards at Varèse seem to be slipping. There's been some minor issues (wrong tack/time listing on The Haunting), medium issues (glitch on the Starship Troopers CD) and major issues like scratched CDs. Most of these issues don't affect me, however it does seem to damage the brand a bit.

Who's the courier? That's unlucky, sorry to hear that.

I dont think the delivery person is the problem, given the description, but Varese uses this guy

OP, does mention shipping issues, sometimes it happens, I had one bad experience with a box-set its not pretty.

The only shipping issue (not issues) was box damage. I dunno if that's what caused the scratches. Again that's Varese (or actually Naxos) not using enough inner packaging to protect from any shipping damage, which is always a possibility. Dont blame the messenger. wink
Labels often use those one-layer boxes (thick cereal box) for 1-3 CDs which dont absorb bumps, and cases are often damaged. Corrugated cardboard is much better in general.

Well, if that's the case! Packaging, then maybe I'll pass on this set, OP will be refunded.

well, we dont know if the damage during shipping caused the scratches, or if they were scratched being in cardboard sleeves. If the former, maybe it was a perfect storm of issues. But even without a shipping problem, tyvek sleeves would help to avoid surface scratching in the long run.

I got no problem with sleeves, card, only the Nightmare box was an issue, sleeves/scratches, its well forgotten now the expansions, re-masters made up for it, I agree! TYVEK needs to be used every-time.

The scratches on the discs did not occur during shipping. All the discs were in their respective pockets and were not dislocated during shipping. I'm playing the discs now to see if there are any playback issues. Hopefully, there won't be any from the scratches.

I received mine yesterday and it was crushed on the left spine. The top smashed up. Horrible packaging for such nice set. No extra bubble wrap, just shoved in a jiffy pak. Come on, guys - we all have some issues that arise time to time with mailing, but considering the cost and the delicate nature of this box set this is really inexcusable. The frustrating thing here is that its not easily replaced like a plastic case.

This was done by Naxos that is handling Varese's fulfillment duties now. If I were Varese I would be furious with them.

I was wondering why my "Haunting" was coming from Tennessee when I'm in LA!

Yeah, not good. In a situation like this, where I'm sure Varèse will be dealing with returns and replacements, does a fulfillment company bear any responsibility?

This falls squarely on Varese. No one forced them to use a fulfillment company. Probably to save money too. They should know the quality of the service they are using. BTW I placed a big order a week ago and it's still unfullfilled.

While I can't agree with your apparent disdain for them saving money, otherwise you are of course correct. They sell it, they're responsible.

(If my inquiring about their recourse with Naxos – which I would understand, from their perspective – suggested otherwise, that was sloppy of me.)

Only because when a company tries to save money, it's usually leads to negative results.

Plus, as has been noted, the scratched discs will have nothing to do with shipping - its purely down to the crappy cardboard slots and/or how they were inserted into those slots. I just received the new Prisoner set from Network. Same crap packaging. All of those discs are scuffed/scratched too.

Just stop with the clever packaging. It doesn't work!
