DOCTOR DOLITTLE: 50th ANNIVERSARY EXPANDED SOUNDTRACK: LIMITED EDITION (2-CD SET)
LLLCD 1450
Music & Lyrics by Leslie Bricusse / Conducted by Lionel Newman
Limited Edition of 3000 Units
RETAIL PRICE: $29.98

La-La Land Records, 20th Century Fox, Fox Music and Universal Music Special Markets present DOCTOR DOLITTLE: 50th ANNIVERSARY EXPANDED SOUNDTRACK: LIMITED EDITION, a special 2-CD set featuring a newly restored and remastered presentation of Leslie Bricusse’s (SCROOGE, WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY) original motion picture score and songs from the 1967 feature film musical DOCTOR DOLITTLE, directed by Richard Fleischer and starring Rex Harrison, Samantha Eggar and Anthony Newley. Songwriter/lyricist Bricusse unleashes a musical bounty to complement this charming incarnation of the classic Hugh Lofting titular character and his magic gift of gab with the animals. Bricusse’s iconic work here would generate such famous songs as “I’ve Never Seen Anything Like It,” “Fabulous Places” and the Oscar-Winning “Talk To The Animals.”

This deluxe 2-CD anniversary edition, meticulously produced, restored, mixed and mastered by Mike Matessino, from studio vault elements, in consultation with the composer, showcases a stunningly full ACT I and ACT II score presentation greatly expanded beyond the original Gold-selling 1967 album. A wealth of previously unreleased material includes the lush underscore arranged by Alexander Courage and Lionel Newman, with the presentation further enhanced by alternates and never-before-heard demo recordings by the legendary Rex Harrison. It’s the long-awaited, definitive assembly of a classic musical score that has delighted fans of all ages for half a century. Matessino’s exclusive, in-depth notes, with recollections from the composer, takes you behind the scenes of Dolittle’s wonderful musical world and Jim Titus’ art design herds the packaging together in classy fashion. This is a limited edition release of 3000 units.

A definite buy, but is this complete or is there material on the Blu-Ray that is missing here?

I hate to be "that guy", but is this in stereo?

It's all stereo except for 3 or 4 cues or bits of cues on disc 2 that were too far gone, and those came from a mono element. And the demos are mono. Mostly this presents a restoration from the original 6-track music elements, including close to an hour of underscore, plus the stereo album masters. Only one cue was completely lost and that's presented with sound effects on the Blu-Ray.

Which cue was that? And thanks for all of your great work on this -- and other scores.

I'm not too fussed about any of the other releases today, but this one is a must buy. Looks fantastic.

"A Stormy Sea," which would have come before the final track on CD1.

This must be the biggest film musical restoration since Goodbye, Mr Chips involving Leslie Bricusse (and mxmx). La La Land have put their phasers on STUN!

I'm sorry to be the one but, are there any talking animals in this version?

There's a talking parrot named Polynesia in the film, but that's it and as far as I recall the parrot doesn't really contribute to the musical numbers if that's what you're wondering.

Polynesia is in the song called "Doctor Dolittle" a bit. The point is not talking animals, but that Dolittle learns the animals' languages.

Anybody in London, come see it in stunning 4K on the big screen and meet Mr. Bricusse this Wednesday!

LLL, thank you for this release and especially releasing in the protection that is needed to preserve such a great score! I have asked my husband for this title and Close Encounters for my Christmas present. Will pick the rest up as I can.

There are no talking animals. The song is "IF I COULD TALK TO THE ANIMALS". Although the parrot does converse with Dolittle .
