La-La Land Records and American Zoetrope proudly present DAVID SHIRE’S APOCALYPSE NOW – THE UNUSED SCORE: LIMITED EDITION, a world premiere release featuring acclaimed composer David Shire’s (THE CONVERSATION, THE TAKING OF PELHAM ONE TWO THREE, NORMA RAE) unused score to the 1979 classic Vietnam War drama APOCALYPSE NOW, directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Shire’s musical take on the horrors of war, actual and existential, depicted in Coppola’s ambitious and psychedelic classic, is a riveting revelation – finally unearthed and restored for all to fully appreciate. It’s a fascinating and impressive find: a lost piece in the puzzle of one of the great works of American Cinema and an exemplary piece of early electronic music production. Produced by Tim Greiving, co-produced by Daniel Wyman and Peter Bergren, assembled and reconstructed by Wyman and Bergren, remastered by Bergren, with a DDP master by Doug Schwartz, this special limited edition release of 2000 units features exclusive, in-depth liner notes by Greiving, with new comments from David Shire, Daniel Wyman and Peter Bergren. Jim Titus’ vivid art design incorporates storyboard sketches from the film’s production.

It's like the cool father of Carpenter and Moroder sound that no one knew existed...like Shire road into town one night, had his fun and then took off the next morning leaving behind a unique musical experimentation that, while not heard until now, laid the groundwork for that awesome synth sound that would be heard in the decade to come.

Wow...incredible ... so Shire was a pioneer in this aspect, I presume ... thank you for this great release! I always wanted to have this!

Now this is a surprise… but a welcome one. I was always curious about what this might have sounded like but never thought I'd have a chance to hear it. I'm always interested in more David Shire.

This is really good news, I never thought i'd get to hear David Shire's unused score for Apocalypse Now.
The score was probably recorded sometime in 1978 because Carmine Coppola & Co. began working on a new score in early '79. The recording of the latter score took a long time though, it wasn't finished until the summer of '79.
According to Bernie Krause who was part of Shire's original team of synthesists along with Dan Wyman and Michael Boddicker (I think) told me that the score was beyond brilliant - one of the most inventive and lyrical pieces of cinema music he had ever heard.
I just love Dan Wyman's synth-work in John Carpenter's '70s movies Assault on precinct 13, Halloween and The Fog. Not as well-known, but equally good, is his work with Giorgio Moroder eg the soundtrack to Midnight Express (film version), as well as several non-soundtrack albums produced by Moroder such as Donna Summer's Once upon a time ('77) and Bad girls ('79), Münich machine/A whiter shade of pale ('78), Giorgio & Chris/Love's in you, Love's in me ('78), and Sparks/No. 1 song in heaven ('79). I also very much like Wyman's electronic/orchestral score to the horror flick "Hell Night" (1981). Feels like I've been waiting forever for a CD release of this score but I'm beginning to think it'll never happen.
