But the film did get a gong, by way of Rod Steiger, didn't it?

Maybe there's a recurrent formula, or a set of weights and balances that relate to voter apathy, sense of worth, and so on that get thrown into the mix and has a net resultant effect which can be approximated enough for speculation to feed back and apply a further set of filters to the eventual outcome.

Very popular films, like Ben Hur and Titanic, which scoop the board almost unanimously appear on the scene quite rarely, but their bells and whistles create a Mexican Wave of 'pro' weighted circumstance.

A film like ITHOTN was probably subject to a certain bias in its time - just my hunch, but it would be interesting to hear from wiser and experienced counsel.

Edit: it pays to check the nominees. There was tough competition, which was as follows: Thoroughly Modern Millie - Elmer Benstein, Cool Hand Luke - Lalo Schifrin, Doctor Dolittle - Leslie Bricusse, Far From The Madding Crowd - Richard Rodney Bennett, and In Cold Blood - Quincy Jones, which has just been released in tandem with Mckenna's Gold by Intrada. Additionally there was the scoring of music adaptation or treatment category running alongside to the original music score.

To be honest, with all that talent of the time running around, I wouldn't want to be in a position to judge anything.
