I couldn't think of a better title so here goes. I am asking for scores that you think are excellent/classic by composers who regularly score but never really produced one of that level, or composers who seldom score but hit a homerun?

OK, I'll play.

Star Trek VI - The Undiscovered Country by Cliff Eidelman

Mad Max II - The Road Warrior by Brian May

Creepshow by John Harrison

I prefer Day Of The Dead from Harrison.

Agree with Mad Max II, May haver several other great scores but Mad Max II is special.

Dificult to find examples with one great score only, Eildelman’s Columbus is as fantastic as Trek VI

I love Poledouris but I think his best scores (Flesh+Blood, Robocop, Starship Troopers, Blue Lagoon, Red October, etc) are not on par with his masterpiece: Conan.

Jaws 3-D - Alan Parker (but he has not scored many movies)

Any moment now Thor will post the other 9 "One Hit Wonder" threads started on this board. One by me.

I did just see Poledouris' name in a thread about one-hit wonders? It wasn't just me?!

Triumph of the Spirit? Magdalene? Someone obviously needs to fill some gaps in his "education"!

Well it depends how you read the question...

Is it "the did one score that rose above everything else" or "they did one score that's well known to the average score fan"

Those two are quite different (though for sure Poledouris obviously doesn't fit even the former). I tend to look at the categorization as the later.

I would say The Last Starfighter - Craig Sagan.

Excellent score that is unmatched by the composers other works.

Guess you've never heard Son of the Morning Star? Intrada may be working on a complete two disc set for that one so keep your eyes open. Safan like Eidelman is more known for his flashy sci-fi score, but Morning Star (like Eidelman's Columbus) is his true masterpiece.

Already on page two and no mention of Ray Cook's sweeping, sumptuous masterpiece CAREFUL, HE MIGHT HEAR YOU yet? Blasphemy!

... Or John Charles' evocative sci-fi magnum opus, THE QUIET EARTH:

... Or perhaps Reg Powell's incredible outdoor adventure epic, ALASKA:

... To name just a few gems from the doldrums of very sparse filmographies!

‘Safan’. From around ‘84 - ‘88 he was on fire. His synth work of that era was way better than Starfighter (imho). Warning Sign, Secrets of the Titanic and Nightmare on Elm Street IV even. And his concurrent work on The Twilight Zone anthology series (7 episodes) was The Empire Strikes Back Of TV scoring.

But that's just it -- the topic is "one hit wonders" not "one great score wonders". I find it odd people can't seem to understand this difference. I'm sure I've brought this up in previous threads about this too (and definetly mentioned Safan and Last Starfighter....though that might have been on Usenet)

BTW where IS Thor with those links? You're slaking man! wink

Elia Cmiral's Ronin made me sit up and take notice in 1998, but he never wrote a listenable score after that. frown

I only have Chris Young's "Murder in the First," but I'm willing to give him another chance. What other Young scores should I try? Recommendations?

Too many great scores to chose from:

Hellraiser - beautifull and elegant
Priest - Gothic horror and propulsive action
Drag Me To Hell - Great theme
The Fly II - Lots of themes and some bombast
Species - Love the slow misterious choral parts and the fast paced action
The Glass House - Beautifull theme
The Core - Big action score full of themes
Killing Season - Another beauty

Richard Bellis was mainly a tv composer who worked on some good scores, solid composer.

Fallen Angel.
Double crossed.
The Haunted.

But your talking knocking it out of the park. I.T. was Richards finest works, its a huge score a classic now.

So..."one hit" as in with the general populace? Because lots of score fans pay attention to a great work even if it's not attached to a beloved movie.
