New song from Xai for the upcoming anime movie Godzilla Monster Planet. The score seems to be composed by Tatayuki Hattori who did the scores for Godzilla vs. Space-Godzilla and Godzilla 2000.
And I like Gojira: Kaiju Wakusei as well. Hattori once again uses his busy style to score the action sequences like in Space Godzilla and Godzilla 2000. There are some dirge like moments (like the opening) that seem to be inspired by the style established of Shin Godzilla and of course trademark Hattori chord progressions. But of course, those who didn't like his former entries into the Godzilla franchise need not apply here
After several listentings to the whole thing it's fast becoming my favorite Hattori Godzilla score. There's a lot of variety over the course of 70 minutes and it has a nice progression from subtle, almost tender material to the more busy marches and action sequences and finally the all-out-bombast of the final fight. There are several themes and motives pervading the (overall quite melodic) score which makes for a satisfying listening experience. I'll take this one over several by-the-numbers Hollywood scores of late at any time. Give it a listen or two on YouTube. I hope Milan will release this one as they did with the score to Shin-Godzilla (and if not, I don't care since I'll get it on Friday from Tokyo's Godzilla store ).
I picked this up the other day and it's fast becoming one of my favourite GODZILLA scores. By far the best of Hattori's efforts (although I do enjoy GODZILLA 2000). Film was pretty good too.
Haven't watched the film yet but it's pretty good Hattori score, indeed quite varied. I love his G'ZILLA VS. SPACE GODZILLA but strangely hated his score for G'ZILLA 2000, which sounded uninspired and lazy to my ears. When Hattori's on he's great (Kura, Longest Tour, Slayer etc.) but when he's off, he's really off.
Am I crazy or do I hear a few bars of one of Williams' olympic fanfares during the cue "Relief"...?
It's not in league with Oshima's, Koroku's or Sugiyama's own efforts for the giant lizard though, I might add... But in a year like 2017... I don't suppose it's fair to hold a composer to those kinds of standards.
Massive Godzilla fan here and I was soooo looking forward to the Planet of Monsters animation but I just couldn’t get on board with it. Don’t really remember the score but that was probably as I was sulking and complaining that Godzilla just didn’t seem like the big G. [ It wasn’t quite as bad as the 1998 experience where I wanted to burn down the cinema and all copies of ‘that film’ ! :-) ] This thread has definitely prompted me to give it another go though as you all make it sound pretty good.
Now up on iTunes. Halfway through my first listen, I dare say there's enough variation on the already established themes and motives as well as a new element dominating the first third of the disc: a more distinctive Japanese sounding "theme" (and orchestration) for the human survivors on earth. Need to give it more time of course until I can definately say if it's a worthy follow up on Disc to Godzilla Monster Planet but so far it's fortunately not just more of the same
Btw. don't believe the samples - there's SO much more new material/variation than they might suggest...
OK, now that I had time to listen to this several times, I think it is a worthy successor to Godzilla Monster Planet. Only on the action pieces there's a bit of a progression/variation left desired. It's mainly more of the same except for what (maybe - remains to be seen) is the material for Mechagodzilla (like track 30). Overall the score has fewer action sequences than the first one, which comes a bit as a surprise. If there will be some thematic/orchestrational conclusion on the next installment, then this will be a very nice trilogy of soundtracks from a composer of which I wasn't thinking to be capable to deliver such a wealth of interesting material over the course of three consecutive movies... IF...
