What are your Oscar predictions for any category? I think DUNKIRK will get a Best Picture nomination.

I don't follow many new films, if any at tall some years, nothing much this year springs to mind, Yeah, Dunkirk, easy winner.

The last Oscar telecast I didn't care who won. The big Best Picture mix up was entertaining television however.smileThe year before I really wanted FURY ROAD to win everything, I know it's not the kind of film the Academy goes for, but it did do pretty well winning six.

I'm hoping that Paul Thomas Anderson will finally get honored. (for PHANTOM THREAD.)

Still some time to see new movies. At this point in time, I'd like to see WIND RIVER be nominated for Best Picture and Best Screenplay. I'd like to see Jeremy Renner be nominated for best actor in that movie. I'm sure Dunkirk will be nominated for best picture.

I"m with you on Wind River, Joan. It is the best movie I've seen this year, and Jeremy Renner was superb. And Taylor Sheridan should get two nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Best Director.

The only way PTA gets an OScar is if his film is about a teenage black girl who was abused ,raped by her stepfather and is now trying to raise her baby as a single, lesbian, mother.

LOL!

No way. No "diversity" in the cast. Just a lot of white guys. Plus, it lacks a "strong, powerful, independent" woman in a major role>

No, You're wrong.. Its the highest grossing war film of all time, it also has a skilled Producer, Nolan's wife, Emma.

Of course, I want it to win its British.

If The Post doesn't come out sounding and feeling like Truth from a couple of years back, I can see it doing very well, what with Hanks, Streep, Spielberg, Williams plus the whole girl power, freedom of the press and F-You Government stance catching the zeitgeist.

Yeah. It lacked a woman as co/lead role, some films do, DUNKIRK'S history was predominantly male in war, its going by origin.

I must say, I was stumped as to the kudos of Dunkirk. I tried to like it, I tried to see the rationale of the wide empty Kubrick set-ups, I tried to tell myself it was minimalist, I tried the mythological angle and thought about the 'edge' symbolism, people on the edge etc., I tried to tell myself the lack of characterisation was irrelevant, I tried to make sense of the totally improbable hold scene where soldiers were mysteriously shot at through the hull by an enemy who weren't there yet, and had they been they'd have better things to do, I tried ignoring the bloodlessness, the lack of chaos.

None of it worked. Even as an editing showcase, it was beyond sterile. Am I alone in this? Here's someone who agrees:

https://www.theguardian.com/film/filmblog/2017/jul/26/bloodless-boring-empty-christopher-nolan-dunkirk-left-me-cold

What am I missing here? I'm rarely so far away from the critics as this.

You are not alone on this, it is neither a bad movie, nor a great one. It is a one off experience, made almost intolerable by the incessant brain-panning score. We have already seen it not do that well at the early awards this year, the prospects of Dunkirk carrying off a lot of Oscars as predicated earlier in the year have already sloped off quite a lot. I did feel that the PG, characterless and bloodless aspects of it diminished the whole thing, it comes across as an expensively produced video game experience.
