The movie had SO much going for it in terms of star power. To this day I have no idea who first approved such a monstrously clichéd story, and for so much money.

Probably Spielberg. It was originally going to be a collaboration between him and Stephen King, before King departed, citing creative differences

Hello? Can anyone help with my above post? Thank you please...

It's a completely different cue in effect. The length (the film version takes the film all the way to the credits), the strength (the film version is a lot less powerful). Either the whole scene was changed and Goldsmith rescored to fit, or he felt a more direct version was needed for the album. It's very likely the former (similar to the situation at the end of Star Trek: Insurrection)

Yeah, finally watching the terrible film really made me wish that the original (and far superior) version of Finally Home had been retained.

I've been revisiting a number of the deluxe editions of 90's era Goldsmith scores, probably motivated by the recent release of AIR FORCE ONE but also crafting some custom album versions of these scores, which are longer than 30 minutes but less than 70 minutes. Anyway, I've been listening to THE HAUNTING today and am just wonderfully hypnotized by its so much of it. I forget how lovely and delicate that theme is for Eleanor and I adore that cavernous sound given to the brass in this score. And in comparing the two versions of "Finally Home", I really like them both and am just awed by their respective epic crescendos present. I never gave this score its due based on the original album, but for me it was pretty much overshadowed by the incredible one-two punch of THE MUMMY and THE 13TH WARRIOR being released that same year. Kudos to Varese on this edition!

Wow, I am listening to this Deluxe Edition for the first time and it really transforms the listening experience from the album! The complete score slowly lures you in, carefully setting the mood and increasing the intensity as is develops. The original album on the other hand hits you with great intensity almost straight away. The Haunting is a beautiful, yet highly unsettling score in its complete form.

Btw, the album is down to the last 60 units on Varèse's website: https://www.varesesarabande.com/products/haunting-the-the-deluxe-edition?_pos=3&_sid=d3715056c&_ss=r

Last 60? I'm glad I ordered it two weeks ago along with Air Force One and U.S. Marshals.

Honestly, I'd never really given the score a listen because I saw the film in theaters back in 99 and did not like it one bit. I've been listening to it a few times now (Varese was really quick to ship those three DE's to me), and it's a great listening experience on its own. I actually listened to it on my phone via headphones last night while evading space monsters on a dead planet in the game No Man's Sky, and it really set the tone!

I thought about buying it when it was on sale, but I didn't in the end. I do quite like the film (amazing art direction & production design), & bought the Blu-ray when it was released in Australia a few months ago, it looks & sounds great.
