LADY IN WHITE/FRANKIE GOES TO TUSCANY
Composed and Arranged by FRANK LaLOGGIA
INTRADA Special Collection 392

There are certain films that embody the essence and imagination of Halloween. The Disney film Hocus Pocus with its magical score by John Debney is certainly one of them. Another film is the 1988 ghost story Lady in White. Frank LaLoggia’s Lady in White transcended its modest budget with an impressive cast and startling visual beauty, combined with the heartfelt nostalgia of a memoir. LaLoggia’s film has gained an increasingly devoted cult following in the three decades since its original release, with the filmmaker’s own unusually lush and melodic orchestral score a key component in its popularity.

On Halloween of 1962, Frankie Scarlatti (Lukas Haas), an imaginative nine-year-old, is locked all night in his school’s spooky cloakroom by bullies. Frankie is terrified by the sight of two unexpected visitors—the ghost of a murdered girl and the murderer himself, who nearly kills the boy while hunting for a piece of incriminating evidence. An African-American janitor is falsely arrested for the series of child murders that have plagued the area, while Frankie investigates and learns the deaths may be tied to the “Lady in White,” an apparition that haunts the nearby cliffside. As Frankie comes closer to solving the mystery, he discovers that the innocent are sometimes punished for the actions of the guilty, and that evil may be closer to home than he ever dreamed.

The ambitiously melodic score pays homage to the composers who had filled LaLoggia's soundtrack collection as a teenager. The greatest influence can be heard in the music of Elmer Bernstein, as Lady’s themes and orchestrations have the distinctive warmth of a classic Bernstein score, and yet he evokes the master so clearly without ever copying from Bernstein’s own masterpiece of childhood wonder and terror, To Kill a Mockingbird, a film clearly echoed in Lady’s subplot of racial injustice. The score is dominated by bright and playful themes that reinforce the lighthearted mood of the early sequences and make the film’s surprisingly dark turns even more effective. The later parts of the score are dominated by a simple, literally “haunting” choral theme for the murdered girl, whose heart-breaking innocence serves almost as a siren song as young Frankie pursues the mystery; for the finale, LaLoggia provides a waltz as the ghostly girl and her grief-stricken mother are reunited in the heavens.

As an added bonus, a second disc featuring LaLoggia's concept album, Frankie Goes to Tuscany, adds a spirited and entirely different musical experience from the ghost story on the first disc. LaLoggia created, almost entirely, the recording with digitally sampled instruments via computer, and while this is in sharp contrast to the 70-piece orchestra that recorded Lady in White, it clearly boasts LaLoggia's melody-driven, film-score inspired ideas. As LaLoggia comments in the notes, "Frankie Goes to Tuscany is a film score in search of a movie. In fact, I’d say that just about every track has a movie idea behind it in varied stages of development."

Enjoy these two sides of Frank LaLoggia. His brilliant score to the haunting Lady in White is everything we at Intrada love about film music. And it's perfect for the Halloween season.

Interesting... for me the first clue for "Lady in White" alluded to this release having a different album presentation i.e. not being assembled in suite form, which would've been a welcome change from the previous CD release. However, it does play well in suite form (not unlike Richard Band's "Troll") even if that's not my preference. A beautiful score, in any case!

I was really hoping that the suites would be split up. But, hey what are ya gonna do?

I personally prefer nicely edited suites. But I already have the original release in my collection. Not sure I'm all that interested in the second disc. Highly recommended though!

I'd have preferred it split up as well, but it could have been left unreleased in any form, so....

Add me to the list of people who hoped this would separate the individual score cues, as the original Varese Sarabande LP did.
I have the expansion/re-issue CD (which sounds great and I love it) and as this is basically the same programme, I'll probably swerve this now unless the samples of the other disc sound amazing!

Less than 150 copies available. Get it before it's gone. I did and it's a great listen.

Weird: This thread inspired me to give the old Southeast Records CD a spin. While I was reading a dragon53 update about the Walking Dead on the other board, a musical figure similar to the Walking Dead Theme started playing about 2:20 into Suite II. I was momentarily disoriented and thought that dragon53 was somehow using soundclips.

I'm not very good at playing theme oriented soundtracks other than at Christmas time, but I always play Lady in White in October for Halloween. What a lovely score! A really unique horror movie too which is full of heart and comedy. Next up Poltergeist.

I still marvel at this score.
Such beautiful and nostalgic melodies, evoking that classic Elmer Bernstein vibe, while still being its own beast.
It's heart-breaking, at times, with the theme/lullaby for chorus and orchestra being one of the saddest I've heard (especially when heard in conjunction with the film).
I loved the film too.
One of my all-time favourite horror/ghost stories (I was fortunate to see it at the London Film Festival, back in the day, sitting quite close to writer/director/composer Frank LaLoggia, who did a Q&A after the film had ended).
Such a wonderful and innocent atmosphere on display, but not without some stunning bone-chilling/goosebumps moments too.
I think it's due a re-watch.

I never quite clicked with this one.. not sure why. So much about it seemed tailor made for me but……. I loved so much the other LaLoggia project FEAR NO EVIL that i was just a bit disappointed when i heard this next. Must try again with it though.

I for one hope you do! It's a gorgeous, touching, and very lyrical score. I've loved this one since the movie came out.
