Okay, so we all know Varese holds perpetual rights on certain titles. What I want to know is, are these rights limited to the actual music contained on their original album releases, or are they for the entirety of the film music recordings made for the films in question?

To illustrate, consider something like Executive Decision. When Varese decided to release an expanded DE of this title, did they have to licence the previously unreleased music from Warner, or could they basically go ahead and issue the DE without Warners' invovement? I understand that regardless of the answer, only Varese would be able to issue the music, my question is whether or not they need to pay money to do so, if that makes sense.

They still need to license any music that wasn't on the original album from the film studio.

Ok, that makes sense. This would explain why hardly any of these DEs get issued for download, Varese probably isn't able to secure DL rights for the extra music.

Well in the case of Rozsa's EYE OF THE NEEDLE we know that Varese have rights in perpetuity to both the original music tracks - which they have never released - as well as Rozsa's Nuremberg re-recording, released to coincide with the film's release. Presumably recorded in Germany to avoid re-use fees to release the OST, which was recorded in London?
