In collaboration with Gruppo Sugar, Music Box Records presents a previously unreleased giallo score composed by Pino Donaggio (Carrie, Body Double) and conducted by Natale Massara.

Written and directed by Giovanna Gagliardo, Via degli specchi (Street of Mirrors) is a 1983 thriller about a female investigator uncovering the death of a young student. While all evidence points to suicide, our hero finds disturbing new clues and a key witness who might put a different spin on the events. Even worse, it seems her husband had an affair with the victim and may have more to do with her untimely passing. Unfortunately the investigation leads to more deaths.

The music for Via Degli Specchi follows in the footsteps of the composer's acclaimed, erotically-charged De Palma thriller scores such as Carrie, Dressed to Kill and Blow Out. In this score, Donaggio follows a 'less is more' approach with a piano-harp duet focusing on the growing bond between the investigator and the witness. As two female characters clash with tragin results, Donaggio accentuates the relationship with some intimate and carefully crafted themes. The CD also includes two original songs from the picture.

Supervised and mastered by Claudio Fuiano, this present edition features the original album program which was slated to be released on LP, plus a host of bonus tracks. 8-page liner notes by Gergely Hubai discuss the film and the score and also includes original comments by Pino Donaggio. Limited Edition of 300 units.

I'm not really much a fan of 80s soundtracks, but you can't go wrong with an unreleased one in the crime Crime/Giallo genre and I'm happy if Music Box covers this part of the CAM/Sugar catalog.

Got my signed copy (yes, thank you, bravo MBR!!) today, just wrapping up a listen.
The closest relative in my mind is 1993's Dove siete? Io so no qui, cd on CAM -minimalist, but not in the usual sense as the notes point out.
Specchi is very low key, chamber scoring and not the typical hyper-romantic-suspense the genre draws from the composer.
It's good , very glad it was unearthed, but remember. ...low-key.
The two songs - the first, opening track sounds like it escaped from the album for Blind Date by Stanley Myers. The second is a bizarre pop quasi-Gary Numan/Devo thing.

I hope someone releases 1987's " Nothing Underneath" someday, before I croak. I had to get that 'what I really want is' in there (Hi James!!!)

Very nice score, good packaging & sound - Pino fans will be pleased smile

-Sean

I'm fascinated by this score.
It's such an off-beat, small-scale (almost improvised) score from Donaggio, from a time when most everything he was doing was grand, operatic Herrmann-styled scoring (1983).
Delicate harp whispers to low-key piano, back and forth, with occasional strumming and synth accompaniment. Repeated harp flourishes, recalling his work on PIRANHA.
Even the track Concerto al Parco, which breaks up the halting and quiet nature of the score, sounds like an intimate classical work for small ensemble.
It's typical Donaggio music, but so unlike what he was doing at this time for these erotic thrillers.
Still, I love 'left turns' like this from my favourite composers.
This was almost a 'blink and you'll miss it' release from Music Box (300 copies). I know I almost did. Even my order with Chris' Soundtracks failed to bag a copy at the end of last year. I ended up paying a few quid over - £18.95 - at Elite Soundtracks to procure my copy.
Any thoughts from other Donaggio enthusiasts? (apart from Sean, who can always be counted on) wink
