I've just read this on IMDB trivia page about the film...

"Composer Jerry Goldsmith had written a musical theme for Norman Bates that director Franklin rejected. The theme ended up being used in Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983)"

I've never heard this before.
I knew the one about Anthony Perkins first hearing Goldsmith's main theme and being brought to tears.
Anyway, anybody know WHICH THEME it was that ended up in TZ-TM (if it is true, that is).
My guess would be the It's A Good Life/Dante one.

Funny that I was just watching the Psycho Legacy last night and they talked about this subject. All they said was the director wanted something different and Goldsmith was kind of taken back on the comment. He wrote the rest of the score and they decided to use the rejected theme for the "old people" in the Twilight Zone movie. I guess this would of been "Kick the Can."

Now after listening to the TZ version, they made a wise choice. Psycho 2 theme is a much better fit for that movie.

Totally agree.
While hindsight is a wonderful thing, the KICK THE CAN melody is TOO sweet and nice for Norman Bates, despite the film showing the tragic and vulnerable side of him.
His redone PSYCHO II theme strikes just the right note of melancholy and longing for the Bates character.
Man, these are fine lines composers tread in their pursuit of perfection.

For whatever help it might be, I found this on a blu-ray review webpage:

Jerry Goldsmith Demo
In the mid-80s, Jerry was well into his experimental synth period. This is an electronic version of the soon to be fully orchestrated theme.

All of the Intrada alternates sound like fully orchestrated cues. This sounds intriguing.
