I was knocked out by this movie (not so much the movie itself). A tremendous score! Could anyone help me with opinions on which CD is the version to get?

I'd be so grateful for any help.

Not heard the Rykodisc, but the Tadlow is tremendous and I'd highly recommend it.

Just get the Gerhardt recording and you'll never need to listen to anything else for the rest of your life. It's the best performance and recording ever. I bought the score in several of its various guises throughout the years and have never warmed to any recording beyond the Gerhardt.

The Rykodisc is terrible. Our release fixed that and it IS the original. Of course, it's OOP but we have a few left of our emergency stash. The Tadlow is a re-recording and fine.

It's amazing that no one mentions our release, which was highly thought of when we did it and instructional on recording techniques.

A good rule of thumb: Always choose the Tadlow

I made sure I upgraded from the Rykodisc to the Kritzerland CD. A fine release.

Looks like the Tadlow, I found it for just under 20 US.

Thanks so much everyone for the help!

The Kritzerland Waxman album is recorded with a smaller orchestra, but the sound is terrific and, personaly, I prefer this performance. The Tadlow is fine for the "pastoral" parts of the score and to listen the whole music, but the action cues are better on the original album tracks or conducted by Gerhardt for the RCA Waxman album, I think. But, it's a matter of personal taste...

I like both presentations.

The Tadlow is an accurate recording of the complete score, and it is extremely well performed and sounds great. The full score has a nice ebb and flow to it, but it is pretty lengthy. It is closer in arrangement to what one hears in the film than the UA recording.

The UA recording, while done with a smaller orchestra, is nevertheless a spirited performance under the baton of the composer, and is expertly arranged for a more concise listening experience than the score. It is, frankly, a great album, and if you like this score, worth having, in my opinion. The Kritzerland release is the same UA recording as the RykoDisc, but with SIGNIFICANTLY improved sound (don't even bother with the RykoDisc at all if you have a chance to get a copy of the Kritzerland).

And, of course, the Gerhardt Sunset Boulevard album is essential in the first place, not just for Taras Bulba. If you don't have it, you should anyway.

If you really like the score you need both the original soundtrack on Kritzerland, for the music as conducted by Waxman, and the new recording on Tadlow, with the complete score plus extras, in state-of-the-art sound.

I'm not a great Waxman fan but his score for TARAS BULBA is terrific.

Oddly the Blu-ray of Taras Bulba is in mono (& I read a not great sounding mono either), whereas the laser disc & DVD & MGM HD all have it in full stereo, I think an MGM balls-up there. The reason this is frustrating is that now the original tapes are long gone, the only way to here the original score conducted by Franz Waxman with the big orchestra, is to see the film, & I don't want to hear it in tinny mono.

Not to mention, having to watch the tinny film!

Yes, well Citizen Kane it ain't, but it's a lot of fun, I still like it, along with some other dodgy adventure films I saw at round about the same time like, The Long Ships & Genghis Khan. I'm a film fan, which maybe puts me in the minority on this board.

"Taras Bulba' is a great film, in my books. True, it could have been greater had Yul Brynner had complete control over it. But you simply cannot make films like that anymore, at least not without CGI. And you cannot get a great score like Waxman's anymore.

I'm grateful to Kritzerland for the ultimate release of the LP soundtrack. But the Tadlow recording is simply a mind-blowing performance, and contains so much more of the score.

Bring on BEN-HUR!

There's a reason that Kino Lorber rarely specifies the sound format of the Blu-rays that they release. It could be that MGM and other suppliers of their video masters don't tell KL what the sound format is. Or it could be that KL is aware that it is receiving downgraded versions from what has appeared on video in the past and wish to keep this information from the consumer.

One way for consumers to try to get this information before purchase is to read reviews of the disc. This assumes that reviewers themselves try to ascertain the sound format through detailed listening. Often, reviewers, hearing sound coming out of two front speakers rather than just the center channel, describe it using the ubiquitous moniker "2.0 sound" without saying whether it is 2.0 mono, 2.0 front stereo, or 2.0 matrixed surround sound. And most reviewers are insufficiently familiar with the history of the titles they are reviewing to know that films such as TARAS BULBA had a stereo presentation in theaters as well as on previous video releases.
