I think he's a pretty good filmmaker. I don't understand all the hate? I loved AMERICAN GRAFFITI, A NEW HOPE and REVENGE OF THE SITH. And enjoy THE PHANTOM MENACE and ATTACK OF THE CLONES. And his masterpiece HOWARD THE DUCK!wink

He produced Howard, he didn't direct it. He also produced Mishima: A Life In Four Chapters for Paul Schrader and Kagemusha for Kurosawa.

HE IS that bad of a screenwriter.

HE IS that bad of a director of actors.

On the flip side......

He is a brilliant business man.

A highly influential film maker.

Shows great taste and common sense when hiring a composer.

That's a difficult question. I think he was a great "ideas man". I think Star Wars (77) and Raiders of the Lost Ark are "classic" films. But the more power and control he got the worse his productions got. But that's pretty much true of anyone.

I'm with you, henry. I even like "THX 1138".

I agree with you, Henry, although I also agree with whoever said he's more of an "idea man" than a confident filmmaker.

He's kind of boring.

He wouldn't give us proper releases of the theatrical cuts. That's pretty irritating.

Oh, and the prequels were painful to watch.

I agree. Great ideas. The problem can come when one has great ideas and they incubate these ideas for many years before they are materialized. A person has a mental image of how they want it to materialize and it can be tough to relinquish control to someone else. After all, you birthed the idea and to leave it up to another to develop and make it become reality can be difficult.
But like you said, absolute power and control can prevent you from allowing other input, even though it might be better than your own.
You can wind up, in the words of General Corman, "out there operating without any decent restraint, totally beyond the pale of any acceptable human conduct."

Since you're a big fan questioning his faith, your question should be "Is George Lucas really that good?"
