HONEY, I BLEW UP THE KID/OFF HIS ROCKERS
Composed and Conducted by BRUCE BROUGHTON
INTRADA Special Collection 385

Disney's 1992 sequel to the hit Honey, I Shrunk the Kids is the focus of Intrada's latest release from the Disney catalog. It's been 25 years since Intrada released the album to Honey, I Blew Up the Kid, and this new production gives the entire score a 21st-century technological makeover. The original Intrada CD offered 40 minutes of the score’s highlights, carefully selected and edited by composer Bruce Broughton into a compelling listening experience. For this newly remastered and expanded release, the running time has been increased to an hour and the program now features several previously unreleased sequences that bring further variations and new ideas into play.

Premiering here as well is Broughton's score to the animated short Off His Rockers that appeared before the film during its theatrical run. Underscoring the tale about a rocking horse who tries to rejuvenate the imagination of a little boy numbed by playing video games, Broughton fashioned the score as both a nostalgic glimpse of childhood innocence and a rousing paean to the Old West. This four-minute sequence is like a thrilling mini-overture to Bruce Broughton’s dazzling—and dizzying—score for Honey, I Blew Up the Kid.

In this follow up to the 1989 original, Wayne Szalinski (Rick Moranis), now working for a high-tech lab in Nevada, is trying to adapt his shrinking-machine technology into doing the reverse. With the help of his now-teenage son, he is unfortunately successful in a mishap that renders his toddler, Adam, prone to ballooning in size. At first Adam simply stomps around the house, attracting the unwanted attention of neighbors, but before long he’s towering over the Las Vegas Strip and strumming the gigantic Hard Rock Cafe guitar. Only a mother’s love can keep Adam still enough for Wayne to zap him back to crib-size, and Diane Szalinski (Marcia Strassman) gets herself blown up to save the day.

Ordered. A no brainer for me. One of my favorite childhood scores. Thanks so much Intrada team!

I always really enjoyed this score. The big, bombastic reading of the ice cream truck jingle at the climax always makes me smile.

And thanks for separating out the very, very short cues, Intrada!

Some of the short cues. Four of the cues in the program above are shorter than the first one in the separate section, for example.

Good point. Hadn't noticed that. Obviously, a creative decision. In any event, I'm happy that they made creative choices for listening.

Too bad Broughton's brief unreleased score for Honey I Shrunk the Audience, a defunct Disney attraction, couldn't be included.

It looks a grand release well done too Intrada, I'm sure it'll sell very well, but I'm passing on this one, the original is fine with me.

I love and am satisfied with the original 40-minute album and have OFF HIS ROCKERS from the promo cd, but I await reactions to the full score anyhow.

I'm looking forward to receiving this one. I never got around to buying the original album. Broughton always brings high quality material. The samples sound fun and zany.
