Bernard Herrmann's classic score for 20th Century Fox's 1959 telling of Jules Verne's epic adventure tale makes a return in the Varèse 500 series! We are bringing back the deluxe expanded edition of this brilliant score that we prepared for our Bernard Herrmann At 20th Century Fox box set back in 2011. Over 72 minutes of classic Herrmann. Truly mammoth! Liner notes by Steven C. Smith (author of A Heart at Fire's Center: The Life and Music of Bernard Herrmann).

A geologist (James Mason) and his assistant (Pat Boone) set off on an expedition to the center of the earth. Following directions found in an inscription hidden in volcanic rock, the explorers travel to a volcano in Iceland to begin their journey. Along the way, a widow of a famous scientist (Arlene Dahl) and an Icelander (Peter Ronson) join their party. However, the treacherous terrain and prehistoric monsters are not their only concern when a rival scientist (Thayer David) is on their trail.

I have the original varese cd release but would definitely upgrade if the sound is markedly improved, I was really happy with how all the Kritzerland releases from the Fox box sounded. Can anyone with the Fox box say how this sounds?

Boy it would be nice if just one of the upteen reissues of this score would re-edit things so that chipper Pat Boone songs weren't stuffed in the middle of every other brooding Herrmann cue. Are there really people who prefer it this way?

It would nice if any of the labels would have a unreleased release, but I guess those days will never happen.
Just re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-releases from now on.

Not everyone can get every release the first time around. I've missed both this and Body Double. It's second and third chance for those who missed out. Re-releases of the more popular titles also fund *new* releases for these companies.

This might be the exception that proves the rule, but I like the Boone songs where they belong chronologically.

Does this have the songs that were missing from the 1997 release? (Yikes! Was that that long ago?!?) It looks like it has My Heart’s In The Highlands. Does it have Here's to the Prof?

What an amazing score!

I didn't even know it had been deleted, it's been around for so long (I bought it in Tower Records, London).

I refer you to my past snarky posts on the lack of samples at the Varese site. I just don't understand why this continues to be an issue.

Is this one of the titles Varese has in perpetuity? Kritzerland didn't reissue it from the Herrmann boxset.

Ah, thanks! Yeah, we seem to have to "request" samples from them.

Kritzerland reissued half of the scores in the box set -- the ones not held by Varese in perpetuity (minus Blue Denim, because the fine FSM is still available). All of the rest are held by Varese forever, so I'm really glad to see they have an interest in making the remaining remasters/expansions available to people again, albeit in very limited 500 copy fashion (did they not notice the Kritzerlands sell out at 1000 copies each?)

Very very smart, and nice, of Varese to do this, and I hope they keep it up.

BTW, Kim, the Varese 500 Series is by definition straight reissues of existing programs (albeit sometimes remastered) -- hence the low quantity -- hopefully, Varese will have more exciting expansions lined up in their next Club Series release.

Apparently STILL missing a couple of extant short cues, one being "The Lamplighter."

One of my major pet peeves about film score CDs in general is when source cues are indexed within the same track as underscore. It doesn't happen often, but it happens more often than it should. (Which is never, IMO.)
