I love it when they design a cover especially for the soundtrack! It happens way too less. There are instances where soundtrack have different covers not for design reasons. Such as albums that need to be different because there was a song album. I'll post the prettiest. Elfman's Batman Other contestants are Elfman's Dick Tracy, Grusin's Hope Floats and oddly enough Varese's Christine. There where soundtrack that just had a title card for some reason (TER's release of Aliens, The Dark Crystal, Folk's Arabian Nights, Demolition Man, Hot Shots, Bennett Salvay's Peaceful Warrior). Boots and promos are, of course, not eligible. And there's the soundtracks that had an unique design. 3:10 to Yuma Wall•E Dante's Peak Others are Farewell to the king, Doyle's Henry V, most Menken's Disney scores (Lion King, Little Mermaid) and of course Star Wars (as posted) and it's sequel. And there are the soundtrack that had a lesser used or teaser poster. Such as Star Trek III and Horner's Brainstorm. I guess there on the fringe of belonging in this thread.

I wasn't sure if I should have included III. I'm pretty sure everywhere I saw it that summer it used the same poster as the album (only, y'know, not square), not the Peak art. This one here (with the addition of the Enterprise and the Bird of Prey): https://www.movieposter.com/poster/MPW-33848/Star_Trek_III_The_Search_for_Spock.html

Star Wars That was the movie poster. At least the first week or so, when I initially saw the film in the theater. Same with the Wrath of Khan cover/poster. The painted poster came much later. Possibly during a re-release or when it hit video. I've never seen the plain black as anything but the album. Lots of variations on the poster but never that one. As for TWOK: This was the sheet in the theaters. You're right, not the Bob Peak one. But also never the Enterprise. I distinctively remember the plain B&W Star Wars movie poster with just the logo. I stand corrected on the WOK movie poster. Edit: Remember Star Wars was an overnight sensation. The B&W cover album was the movie poster. The Hildebrandt brothers were contracted to produce a proper movie poster at the 11th hour and had 48hrs to complete it. Maybe you're thinking of this.

Actually, the painted artwork was there from day one, but I had only seen it in newspapers. I used to have them in an album along with the reviews, but they're gone. However, I did find this online... This full page ad was THRILLING when I was a kid and unforgettable. And notice it was still numbered II on the print ads from the beginning. Absolutely correct. There is a non zero chance that I have that clipping in box somewhere. EDIT: Ha! I had forgotten about Kahn's "skeleton hand" in that ad. I was totally on the edge of my seat waiting for him to take off that glove and see the bones!
