Ok, just accidentally found this composer/arranger on youtube. I confess to have never heard of him, but it strikes me that his jazz fusion sound seems like it was tailor-made for harder edge film scoring of the 60s and early 70s. Very filmic, but I don't think he ever scored a picture.
Fans of Lalo Schifrin spy/crime music and Barry Gray's UFO scores, two name but two, might enjoy this guy.
Some internet sources say that he invented this "sound". Not sure about that as some similar sounding film &TV scores seem to predate it.
Question: did he invent this sound, or take inspiration from the movies?
Have skip through this. Some parts are more scorish than others.
Axelrod is a gift — check out his albums HEAVY AXE ("Get Up Off Your Knees"), SERIOUSLY DEEP ("Reverie") and SONG OF INNOCENCE ("Urizen"). I don't know how much he influenced the contemporary scoring scene. Perhaps his music was described as "cinematic", rather than being a direct influence on music for film. He has been sampled by the hip-hop world extensively. Capitol released a compilation back in 2005 of his stuff and it's fantastic. I wasn't around when the likes of Axelrod, Johnny Harris (MOVEMENTS), etc. were releasing music, but I feel like it's aged better than the film music from that period.
