Well, the last record store in my hometown is closing in August. My whole family is heartbroken. We have been loyal customers for almost 30 years and will miss the owner and staff deeply. The four of us would visit at least twice a month and could spend hours perusing the aisles and rows of every genre. The owner has watched my children grow up and become two of his loyal customers.

The owner is retiring and not closing due to slow business. Actually, he is busier than ever with a vast selection of vinyl. He told us he is tired and wants to do something else in his later years. This store was extremely supportive of local bands and artists and promoted them and always found room for their one and only cd or ep.

Buy the store and carry on the legacy! Owning a record shop would be a cool family business.

Josh, you don't know how tempted we are. We already own a business and my husband would love to work for someone else someday again. He and the owner commiserate on owning a business all the time. Our home state is too damn expensive to own a business in. It would be awesome though.

The last record store in my town closed maybe 5 years ago. Hmm maybe 7 actually. We had one chain bookstore that closed 2 years ago, and haven't had a used bookstore in maybe 4 years. frown

To visit an actual standalone CD/vinyl /book/dvd/bluray store is a 30-45 minute drive.

There's only one "used" CD/Record store in my area and they have virtually nothing in the soundtrack section. They even stopped selling used Blu Rays.

Berkeley has 2, both reduced by about 1/3 in size in the last 2 years. I'm counting the days until they finally go the way of the dodo....

The bad thing about the old days was that even a CD with one good track on it was priced at about $18. That's almost $30 in today's money. The big record stores carried a vast selection, but buying a bunch came with a heavy price tag.

Then came peer to peer file sharing, and then legal downloads.

Add in the exclusive deals that record labels made with Target or Walmart, where you could get the whole CD (with "bonus" tracks) only at that one store.

It's a wonder any stand-alone record stores are still around. And I really hope they can stay, because browsing actual racks is so much better, and you might even meet someone with similar interests and make friends, but it's a wonder.

What is wonderful about this store is that the prices on new releases is reasonable and there is a vast used section with equally reasonable prices. In addition, this guy could find anything and order it for you. frown Sigh.

You omitted the great vinyl purge of the 1990s, which provided an alternative to those overpriced and overrated silver discs. This is how I acquired most of my collection, much of it pristine condition, and much of it for under five bucks a throw. Downloads came a little bit later.

UPDATE ..... FANTASTIC UPDATE

The aforementioned music store was supposed to close it's doors on August 23rd. However, the owner posted an update on his FB page today announcing that he has had a change of heart and is going to remain open. Apparently he reached his decision after receiving a heartfelt letter from a friend and from discussions with long time customers over the past weeks. We visited many times and expressed our sadness. He worked out a deal with his landlord and all is well. Gary is an important part of our community and we are thrilled.
