Universal Pictures Home Entertainment is celebrating the 35th anniversary of E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial this fall–and fans of the Oscar-winning original soundtrack are in for an unexpected treat tastier than a bag of Reese’s Pieces.

Steven Spielberg’s masterpiece (and the author’s unquestionable favorite film) will be released in several new packages on September 12, including a bow on the 4K Ultra HD format and a new deluxe gift set. Included in that set is a soundtrack release, which The Second Disc has confirmed is the original soundtrack album from 1982, newly remastered for this package.

This is a fantastic note for collectors in need of that classic LP on CD. Belatedly transferred to in the late 1980s, that album (certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America and winner of three Grammy Awards) has been effectively missing in action since 1996, when a new expanded soundtrack (featuring music from the scoring sessions to the film, as opposed to the concertized arrangements in a separate session which the album drew from) was released, both as part of a lavish laserdisc box set and then on its own. (That program was retouched and expanded for the film’s 20th anniversary theatrical reissue in 2002; this pressing was also part of a box set celebrating the film’s premiere on DVD.)

The original soundtrack was last issued anywhere on the format it first premiered, when a new vinyl pressing was issued by Geffen/UMe in 2015. While it is unknown if that pressing was given any significant remastering, Universal’s specific call-out of the remastering on this new CD is good news indeed.

Additional E.T. 35th anniversary celebrations in September include two theatrical screenings from Turner Classic Movies and Fathom Events the week after the new Blu-ray release. Watch this space for pre-order links when they become available!

Glad to hear the LP version will be available again, and I assume, in better quality...

Ahhh yeah, but WHO remastered it?
Someone like Mike Matessino and it's a home banker.
Some brickwaller and it's ear bleed death.

Might this explain why the guys at Intrada said something to the effect that "William's camp didn't want to revisit E.T. at this time"?

Glad to know that the album will be remastered.

Those arrangements especially for the 1982 Original Soundtrack vinyl LP/cassette are some of John Williams' finest work. Thrilled to hear this news.

I wonder if Bruce Botnick was involved in re-mastering the tapes he originally recorded?

Unless a definitive restored 2cd edition is planned I would suspect that a stand alone issue of the cd may also happen someday or sooner. The 2002 Ultimate Edition DVD set featured the previous 20th Anniversary release which was also issued as a stand alone album on cd and later on the SACD format. A perennial classic Academy Award winning score and Grammy Award winning album has to appear on normal cd or even as a digital download at some point.

Just wait you guys..

This looks like a great release, but I am going to wait. I still have a copy of the OST that I picked up back in 1993, and it sounds great. I am hoping, however, that this release heralds a definitive score release from one of our favorite labels...

This is my hope as well. I'll be waiting.

*sigh* I'm happy with my Blu Ray movie, but I'd love to get the remastered original album presentation.

People asking for remastered versions of title x and y - be careful what you wish for! Some of these early MCA CDs were mastered by the best people in the industry. They won't get any better - just the opposite...

I just got the DDD version of the E.T. OST and it sounds great! I also already have the Blu-ray so I don't think I'll get this new set. But it does look great!

Hear! hear!

To me, this is the best-recorded film score of all time!

this board really needed a new ET thread.

And a few more "Star Wars" and "Star Trek" -- and now, "Wild, Wild West" -- threads too!

I doubt Spielberg or John Williams would allow a hack to brickwall this re-master.

When the 30th anniversary DVD box of Close Encounters of the Third Kind included a soundtrack CD, it sounded great, and was presumably remastered by Sony.
