One of the greatest Swedish actors of his generation. I had no idea he was sick. frown

Americans probably know him best as the bad guy in MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - GHOST PROTOCOL or the original MILLENNIUM trilogy, but he did so much more.

Sheesh, that is a shame. I enjoyed the hell out of him in the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

And perhaps the underrated sci fi film EUROPA REPORT from a few years ago (one of my favourite movies that year, in fact).

In THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO (Män som hatar kvinnor), Michael Nyqvist played "Mikael Blomkvist," a journalist who is aided by a young female hacker, "Lisbeth Salander" (Noomi Rapace), in his search for the killer of a woman who has dead for forty years. The film was directed by Niels Arden Oplev. The score, by Jacob Groth was released by Milan. Reportedly, all music for this film and its two sequels was recorded in just 4 days.

A terrible loss. I'm with you buddy. I saw him in numerous films, but his performance in John Wick totally blew me away. RIP sir.

In the second film of the "Millennium Trilogy," THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE, computer hacker Lisbeth and journalist Mikael investigate a sex-trafficking ring. Lisbeth is accused of three murders, causing her to go on the run while Mikael works to clear her name.

Of the three books/films in the Millennium Trilogy (named from the magazine for which journalist Blomkvist works), this is the only one whose English title is a literal translation of the Swedish original. THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO was originally titled "Men Who Hate Women." THE GIRL WHO KICKED THE HORNET'S NEST was originally titled "The Castle in the Sky that was Blown Up."

Daniel Alfredson directed this sequel. Some of Jacob Groth's score was released on a Silva Screen CD that included music from the entire trilogy. For its U.S. release, the film was put into three times as many theaters as THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO and grossed three times as much in its initial run (about $7 million).

In the concluding chapter of the trilogy, THE GIRL WHO KICKED THE HORNET'S NEST, Lisbeth is recovering in a hospital and awaiting trial for three murders when she is released. In order for Mikael to prove her innocence, Lisbeth must be willing to share the details of her sordid experiences with the court.

Daniel Alfredson again directed, and Jacob Groth scored the film. The 2009 film was veteran actor Per Oscarsson's last film. He died in a house fire the following year.

In 2011's MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - GHOST PROTOCOL, Michael Nyqvist played "Kurt Hendricks," a madman who has gained control of a satellite and possession of Russian nuclear codes, and wants to start a nuclear war. The opening scene of the film originally consisted of a younger Hendricks preparing the speech about nuclear endgames, the one he can later be seen giving to Congress in Ethan's (om Cruise) mission report. However, the scene didn't work as intended, and was scrapped in favor of a more action-oriented opening.

Brad Bird directed the action thriller. Michael Giacchino scored the film, becoming the first composer to score more than one movie of the series. Varese Sarabande released the soundtrack.

DISCONNECT was a multi-storied drama centered on a group of people searching for human connections in today's wired world. The third of the three stories follows a damaged married couple named "Derek" and "Cindy" (Alexander Skarsgård and Paula Patton), who just recently lost their baby. When they become victims of identity fraud, they hire a private investigator (Frank Grillo), who reveals to the couple that the culprit who stole their savings found Cindy on an online grief support chat room. Unfortunately for the pair, there isn't enough evidence to arrest the suspect, so Derek and Cindy decide to confront the man (Michael Nyqvist) themselves.

Paula Patton and Michael Nyqvist had both appeared in the prior year's MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE. Henry Alex Rubin directed the 2012 film. Max Richter's score was released by Milan.

EUROPA REPORT received only a limited release in the U.S. The 2013 sci-fi film followed an international crew of astronauts as they undertake a privately funded mission to search for life on Jupiter's fourth largest moon. Michael Nyqvist plays an engineer named "Blok" who is none too keen on the ship's small quarters, but deals with it the best he can because he is intrigued by the prospects involved in the mission.

Sebastián Cordero directed the film. Bear McCreary's score was released by Sparks and Shadows Records.

"ZERØ HØUR" was a conspiracy television series that followed "Hank Galliston" (Anthony Edwards), publisher of a paranormal-skeptics magazine, who gets caught up in a hunt for the holiest of relics going back to the early days of Nazi Germany after his wife, "Laila" (Jacinda Barrett), is abducted. Michael Nyqvist played "White Vincent" a notorious mercenary and terrorist.

The show was a mid-season replacement for ABC, replacing the military drama "Last Resort," which was cancelled after 13 episodes. "ZERØ HØUR" premiered on Thursday, 14 February 2013, at 8 PM. Unfortunately, the one-hour show's competition in that time slot was withering. CBS had the sitcoms "The Big Bang Theory" and "Two and a Half Men" which were the #3 and #10 rated series on television that season. And Fox had #8 rated "American Idol." "ZERØ HØUR" was cancelled after 3 episodes and replaced with "Wife Swap."

THE GIRL FROM NAGASAKI is a reworking of "Madame Butterfly," the Puccini opera about a 1904 U.S. Naval officer named Pinkerton who rents a house on a hill in Nagasaki, Japan, for him and his soon-to-be wife, "Butterfly." This 2013 film recasts the story -- still set in Nagasaki -- in late 1950s Japan, with the title character a survivor of the atomic blast that leveled the city shortly before Japan surrendered to end WWII. Michael Nyqvist played "Father Lars." The film played the Sundance Film festival, but did not get a theatrical release.

Reckless desire wreaks havoc over a Memorial Day weekend as a family confronts the volatile and fragile nature of love in 2014's DAYS AND NIGHTS. Inspired by Anton Chekhov's "The Seagull," the film is set in rural New England in 1984. The ensemble cast is headed by the family matriarch "Elizabeth" (Allison Janney), an aging movie star who is joined by her lover and film director, "Peter" (Christian Camargo, who also makes his directorial debut). They are joined at the family estate by her sick brother, "Herb" (William Hurt), and her artistic son, "Eric" (Ben Whishaw). Also on the estate is the family doctor (Jean Reno), custodian (Russell Means), the caretaker (Michael Nyqvist), his wife (Cherry Jones), their daughter (Katie Holmes), and her ornithologist husband (Mark Rylance). Claire van Kampen provided the unreleased score.

In 2014's JOHN WICK, an ex-hitman (Keanu Reeves) comes out of retirement to track down the gangsters that took everything from him. Alfie Allen plays the gangster who killed Wick's dog and stole his car, and Michael Nyqvist plays Allen's father, the Russian mafia kingpin who also happens to be Wick’s old boss.

Chad Stahelski is the credited director, and David Leitch is credited as a producer. This was due to Directors Guild regulations allowing for only one director to be credited, unless unusual exceptions are made. No exception was granted in this case, even though the two produced and directed this film together as a team. Stahelski voluntarily took no producer credit.

In a horrifying accident, Michael Nyqvist cut his entire head open during a shooting of a scene with a stuntman, leaving his ear resting on his right shoulder. This resulted in eighty stitches. Some of the last scenes had to be re-done to hide Nyqvist's scar.

The film's score, by Tyler Bates and Joel J. Richard, was released by Varese Sarabande.

I always liked this actor. He died way too young. So sad.

R.I.P.

A question for the English speaking fans of Michael Nyqvist:

How many of his Swedish films have you seen?
