Fiddler on the Roof was a different category but looking at the other 4 Academy Awards that John Williams has won (Jaws, Star Wars, ET, Schindler's), they were all juggernauts of critical and musical recognition where the winner was not really in doubt. So if you have to ask would Jurassic Park would have won, then I already assume it would have lost like the other 45 times he has lost. But you never know.

In terms of the score to Schindler's List, I think the score was more instrumental than maybe it gets credit for. There's a lot of the movie that is without music and the movie holds its own with some powerful moments. But the interesting thing to me is the extent to which Williams still has something to say musically in the those moments that he does score, particularly the last hour of the film. That's ultimately what helped lift the film from just a compellingly depressing account of a piece of history and into the territory of something redeeming and emotional. I think of a scene like when the husbands are looking out the window to see if their spouses made it back and you get the main theme in the bass line and then a gorgeous counterpoint with violin that was the perfect statement. That kind of insight and poignancy added a lot.

Just listened to SCHINDLER'S LIST again, what a score! One of my favorites, I'm indeed glad it won.

I think the JP is a John Williams miss. That heroic main theme, pleasant as it is, means what exactly? How does that even work with the movie? I've read the novel and seen the movie, and I think Williams's music sounds better suited to a different movie. Wasn't nominated? So THAT'S the JW score from the last 30 years that wasn't nominated. Schindler's List deserved the Oscar that year.

Right. Not to mention it is VERY similar to the RAIDERS theme.
His secondary themes are much, much better.

bottom line:
If Goldsmith, Silvestri, Elfman scored the film it would have been just as great a success.
I doubt any other composer could have contributed as moving, powerful, and fitting a score for SCHINDLER as JW!

I LIKE IT BUT it is 'minor' Williams

It's about as 'major' Williams as it gets, in every single meaning of the word. Of course, I also think it's the greatest score ever written in the history of film music (and music in general), but that's me.

For me, it's not even "Top 5"; it's right there on the very top, about a mile ahead of nr. 2.

Wow, interesting this high devotion to JURASSIC PARK. I enjoy the score (and I have particularly fond memories of the time the movie came out and I listened to the music... it was a beautifully hot summer in Los Angeles back then)... it is really good. But I think I like the score to LOST WORLD even more, which is among my favorite Williams scores. But I agree, JP is a splendid score.

I'm not going to deny that there's a bit of personal importance going on as well, in addition to the score's qualities. It cemented my film music interest.

That's one terrific score to cement film music interest! By the time Jurassic Park came out, I was already a collector in my mid 20s...
The scores one cherishes not just for musical but also for personal reasons do take on a special significance that pretty much trumps everything else.

JP was probably the score that cemented my interest as well....years before I really knew I *had* an interest.
Though a lot of that was more a matter of circumstance, back when I was copying sheet music into my computer and the JP piano book was almost the only John Williams that the library had a sheet music of (and note the library in Cincinnati has an extremely large selection of classical music sheet music of both full and reduced kind)

Schindler's List would've pretty much been the same film with or without the score.
Jurassic Park, on the other hand, is elevated by Williams' contributions.

Schindler's List is one of the great John Williams scores. It immeasurably enhanced the impact of the film. Any notion that the film would have been "the same film with or without the score" rather negates any appreciation for the art of film scoring.
