12 minutes is a bit on the skimpy side, but 100 minutes is really only useable with stuff like Wagner's "Ring" cycle. I've listened through the material once, and think there's a good 50 minutes in there somewhere that would make for a fluid listening experience. But God if I know how to organize it. I was hoping someone could save me the hours of "fooling around" with the tracks myself, because it's a score I'd really like to have in my digital collection.

If you, James -- who know this score intimately -- were to select a 50-minute program from these 100 minutes, what tracks would you choose?

Maybe British sarcasm doesn't travel...but basically I was "taking the Michael" ! (aka taking the piss)

James can't do that for you. He's lived and familiarized himself with that score intimately for months on end, and it would be like asking a parent to "discard" half of his "children." I'm afraid that the only person who can make that "personal" selection is you, Thor.

Try eliminating the (glorious) first track and the final suite (sacrilege!) and build up your suite from the film score proper as follows: Listen to the 2 discs again, one track at a time, and not necessarily in sequence. Start by eliminating one-by-one tracks that you might not wish to listen to again.

Then program the remainder, tally up the total timing, and listen again and see what else you may wish to eliminate. You will actually begin to familiarize yourself with the complexity of the score, and appreciate the recording more.

When you have finally constructed your personal 50-minute suite, listen to the two suites that open and close the 2CD set that you eliminated at the beginning of the process, and see if your 50-minute suite compares favourably with each of those suites.

Yes, it's work, but in the end it's also musically rewarding. Who knows, you might suddenly realize that the whole score as it exists on CD is the one that you would want to listen to on a regular basis.

BTW, when James says he was "taking the Michael," he wasn't referring to urination smile , but merely teasing, as in "taking the piss out of" an unreasonable request.

Yup, I realize that's probably what I have to do. But I had to ask here a couple of times, just in case. I'll let it stay in my 'pending' folder for a weeks more, untill I get the time to make a playlist.

I hope you'll include a "Producer's Playlist Suggestion" in the liner notes -- for, let's say, a 60-75-minute listening experience! wink

(btw, I don't think I've ever listened to a 158-minute musical work in my life....I've tried Wagner's "Ring" on occasion, but never managed to get through in one sitting).

Got this movie on Blu-ray just today. Unfortunately, no isolated score track but it is the Roadshow version with Perlude, Overture and Exit music.

I suggest a suite consisting of all the silent passages between tracks. I can compile one for you and send a CDR.

Better yet a new interest other than listening to great music might be the solution. smile
