FRIDAY, MAY 19

HOW TO TALK TO GIRLS AT PARTIES---trailer released for the punk sci fi movie based on the Neil Gaiman novella starring Elle Fannng and Nicole Kidman.

Trailer link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnDyjAcofio

HAN SOLO---photos released show Alden Ehrenreich as the young Han Solo and pre-ILM vehicles.

AQUAMAN---director James Wan released the first photo of Amber Heard as Mera.

JURASSIC WORLD 2---teaser poster released for the sequel.

ALIEN---Ridley Scott said a future sequel will explain who the Space Jockey from the original 1979 movie really is, “We’ll then come back in to the rear end of Alien 1. You know full well who the affectionately termed Space Jockey is – the guy sitting in the seat.”
Fan speculation is that the Space Jockey is really David who was infected by one of his own Alien eggs.

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR---synopsis released for the sequel.

"As the Avengers and their allies have continued to protect the world from threats too large for any one hero to handle, a new danger has emerged from the cosmic shadows: Thanos. A despot of intergalactic infamy, his goal is to collect all six Infinity Stones, artifacts of unimaginable power, and use them to inflict his twisted will on all of reality. Everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment-the fate of Earth and existence itself has never been more uncertain."

BATGIRL---Alicia Silverstone, 40, hinted she would like a second chance to play Batgirl in the Joss Whedon movie after her 1997 Batgirl role in BATMAN & ROBIN, “I feel like I could do a much better Batgirl now than I did then. It would be fun to tackle it again, because I’m older and my acting is better. I know I would bring so much more to it. I was just a baby. It was a different thing. But I had fun back then, and I think it would be fun to do it again.”
She added that she's interested in a cameo, too, “I’m open to anything, whatever people bring to me and whatever the best choice is for that time.”

GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS---Sally Hawkins is returning as Dr. Vivienne Graham. Charles Dance (GAME OF THRONES) joined the sequel cast in an undisclosed role.

THE MUMMY---the reboot movie is projected to have a disappointing $40 million opening which may threaten Universal Pictures' future reboot monster universe including FRANKENSTEIN, DRACULA, THE WOLF MAN and THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY---creator Steve Engelhart said he's unhappy with Mantis in the movie, “Well, I was not happy with Mantis’ portrayal. That character has nothing to do with Mantis. I will say that I liked the film quite a bit overall, they’re doing good stuff and I enjoyed my night at the movies so long as I turned my brain off to the fact that that’s not Mantis up there."
He added, "I really don’t know why you would take a character who is as distinctive as Mantis is and do a completely different character and still call her Mantis."

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 6---Angela Bassett will play the new CIA director in the sequel.

THE SILENCE---Stanley Tucci stars in this movie based on the horror novel about a deaf girl and mankind who are threatened by ravenous bat-like creatures called Vesps.

RESISTANCE---Jesse Eisenberg will play mime Marcel Marceau in this movie about the famous French mime who helped save Jewish orphans whose parents were executed by the Nazis in World War II.

INSTINCT---new CBS series based on the upcoming James Patterson novel about a college professor and expert on psychopaths who comes out of retirement to team up with a female NYPD detective to hunt down a serial killer. Alan Cumming (X2) and Bojana Novakovic (DRAG ME TO HELL) star. Marc Webb (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN) will direct the pilot.

THE YOUNG POPE---Jude Law commented on not returning for the sequel, THE NEW POPE, “It wasn’t that I wrapped it up assuming that I was done with it but I went in, we went in, to make a 10-hour film, and we did that. To say that there wasn’t room for more, I’d have been foolhardy. But it was clear from the get-go that we thought this is a great character and it’s a great world that he’s created here. But yeah, I didn’t go in thinking I’ll be doing this for the next 10 years.”

BUSTER KEATON---Peter Bogdanovich will direct a documentary about the silent-screen star.

GABRIEL ALLON---MGM Television bought the rights to the novels about art restorer/spy Gabriel Allon.

LAST MAN STANDING---the cancelled sitcom is being shopped to other networks although a petition to get ABC to renew it has over 354,000 signatures.

DESCENDANT---horror movie underway about parents who worry that their young son's genius may be caused by evil forces. The writer is Jeff Buhler (JACOB'S LADDER). The director is Nicholas McCarthy (THE PACT).

FSM's Mr. Jack should RUN, not walk, to see How to Talk to Girls at Parties. It will no doubt be existence changing. smile

Alden blah blah blah as the young Han Solo? Peter Deluise could have played that role (roll?) thirty years ago. Young Han was a bit pudgy in his youth, wasn't he?

Alicia Silverstone: You had your chance to play Batgirl twenty years ago...and you bleeeeew it!

The thing about the Alien series is that there really isn't any substance to it--at all. Okay, maybe "corporations bad."

But let's stop pretending these movies are anything more than 1950s monster movies.

That's the problem with these franchises. The originals and sometimes equally good sequel(s) are fun popcorn movies. Nothing more, nothing less. When they drag the series on endlessly, they try to force a substantive narrative which really has no literary weight.

I agree. Even your cinematic hero George Lucas crowbarred "substance" into his Star Wars franchise (the Ewoks represent the Viet Cong tearing down the American technological beast, "biological" explanations for The Force with that Midi-Chlorian nonsense, and all the other filler he attempted to inject into his vapid movie series.

Star Wars is the ultimate "empty calorie" movie experience. Enjoy it for what it is, a Big Mac. wink

Funny, I was going to bring up the Midi-Chlorian thing in my post! George Lucas will always be my hero for creating Star Wars- though one was enough in retrospective. wink
