So, it's that exciting time where I'm starting to look at getting a new car. I've loved my Jag XKR but I've had it a while and with a 5 litre supercharged engine, it really is pretty thirsty.

Anyway, I've narrowed my choices down to either a Porsche Boxster or a Porsche Cayman. The former is a convertible and I've never owned one before - my partner had a convertible Mini before and that's the closest I've come.

So here's a question to any of you in the UK who have had a convertible - do you get much use out of it with the top down (the car that is, not yours!) despite the English weather or is it generally something you get maybe only a few day's worth of use a year?

I'm seriously tempted by the convertible but I just worry it won't be worth the money if I only get to use it a few days a year.

A few days in the scant British summer is all that you can realistically expect.
Convertibles are for dry, arid climates, not the British weather.
I've never had one but have friends who have and they regret the choice (noisier etc) plus they look a like a dork with the covers down and dressed in caps and scarves in the sunny freezing cold British Autumns!wink

Never mind the Porkers, Mike. What you need is a five year old diesel Passat with 63,000 miles on the clock. Luckily I know where you can get one and I, I mean the owner, would be fine doing a straight swap with the Jag.

It has lots of headroom. Okay, not as much as an open top, but...

I'd be thrown out of the Jeremy Clarkson Appreciation Society if I was seen driving a diesel!

I had wanted a convertible for many years but my better half wasn't convinced ...

... but when we got an unmissable offer (which was better than we originally thought) it seemed stupid to pass up and yes, we went for a hard-top convertible. I wish I'd paid that much extra for the petrol engine but the choices were limited and in 2012 the government hadn't woken up to the fact that diesel is worse that petrol (gasoline for our overseas friends) ...

... anyhow, with the odd reservation, we love the car. Yes, we look for days when we can put the top down (and we've made the odd mistake) but we've had plenty of opportunity most years .. and for driving in Spain, France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany, Austria*, Italy, Luxembourg ... it's superb!

* see avatar.

A couple of years ago (late May) we drove top-down along Glen Coe ... brilliant!

I wouldn't treat the car as the main family car since it does have limitations but for those times when you can use it, preferably on country roads, it actually makes driving pleasurable. With windows up it isn't noisy (I have conversed with my mother who is hard-of-hearing whilst driving) or cold ... though the back seats can be a little breezy. With the wind-deflector in place it's a really good ride.

They're just as warm and soundproof as other cars nowadays. It's just a matter of keeping the roof up in winter.

Not in the UK, but I have an opinion:

I always wanted a ragtop.
What always stopped me is the memory of seeing a bunch of miserable little sh*ts running down the street and using pocket knives to slice up the roof of the convertable that had the misfortune of being randomly parked there that night.

Honestly--if I carried a gun, the world would be a couple of useless punks shorter now.

Well, anyone in the UK today will have heard the dire weather warnings ... and, yes, that northerly wind is cold frown ...

... but we've just driven ten miles or so, top down, in glorious sunshine and not felt need of woolly hats. I did wear gloves and a lightweight jacket but I didn't turn the heating up.

Yes but you're in the tropics compared with up here. It's so cold here that I'm looking suspiciously at any big dog that goes by for signs of shape-shifting alien activity...

Thanks for all the views guys.

Still can't decide between the Boxster softtop or the Cayman hardtop - I guess I'll just have to test drive them both to form a view.

Yeh but Mike lives in the S East and we have our own warmer microclimate.
Much of the shit weathr from atlantic and sth west turns north and pisses on McCrum and TallGuy before it reaches us.
So we have a lot drier sunnier days than rest of uk.
But worst time of year to buy a soft top mike - get good value in oct.

That said, Porsche is silly bills mate, garage, insurance petrol.etc
Go for a merc sports. Good performance, and wiv Hard top into boot.

I got a coupe wiv a big targa sunroof, best of both worlds. Sunburn on my bald head and warmth when i need it.

My fave is those cooller days wiv sunroof wide open and heat on the feet and seats.

Well I finally made a decision and took the plunge for a convertible - a Porsche Boxster S.

Picking it up on Thursday morning and very excited.

This isn't mine, but it's identical;

Mike, that looks fabulous (not too taken with the colour ...)

But just think: you could have bought a Mini Cooper convertible and put the money saved towards a decent hi-fi system!

Enjoy the motoring!

Fortunately, I am a completely normal person. Unlike your good self who is anything but!

Mind you, the insurance is so high on this I am now making effigies of insurance professionals out of blue tack and sticking them with pins. How are your knee caps feeling TG?
