FRIDAY, APRIL 21

THE MUMMY---international trailer released for the Tom Cruise monster movie.

Trailer link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-G0P-C4Kbw4

THE 15:17 TO PARIS---Clint Eastwood will direct this movie based on the book THE 15:17 TO PARIS: THE TRUE STORY OF A TERRORIST, A TRAIN, AND THREE AMERICAN HEROES in which three friends, all US military men, thwarted a terrorist attack on a train with over 500 passengers traveling to Paris in 2015.

DOCTOR WHO---a source claimed Michaela Coel will replace Peter Capaldi as the next Doctor Who. If so, Coel would be the first female and first black Doctor Who. Other actresses rumored to be candidates are Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Natalie Dormer, Olivia Colman and Tilda Swinton.
However, a British tabloid claimed an irate father complained to the BBC that a female Doctor would confuse his children, and the BBC replied, "there are currently no plans to have a female 'Doctor Who'."

THE X-FILES---Fox ordered ten episodes for Season 11 which will air in 2017-2018.

GAME OF THRONES---first official photos released for Season 7.

MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE---Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige said the MCU will add more big stars to its movies, in addition to Sylvester Stallone, Kurt Russell, Robert Redford, Cate Blanchett and Glenn Close, "There are a few [names] that are coming up, actually. I'll keep this spoiler-free, but be assured that there are more surprises of that caliber heading into our universe in the next few films." Feige confirmed he once talked to Al Pacino about appearing in a Marvel movie, but Pacino wasn't interested, "No... not in this case. Someday, someday, but there are others that I'm thinking of right now."

SMART HOUSE---Lionsgate/James Wan movie underway in which a family in the witness protection program is placed in a smart house that is programmed to defend its inhabitants. When assassins attempt to kill the family, the house goes into its defense mode to repel the invaders. Alexandre Aja (PIRANHA 3D) is the director.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY---director James Gunn was asked if Adam Warlock will appear in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, “He’s not. He’s not in INFINITY WAR. But he will be a part of the future Marvel cosmic universe and a pretty important part of that… if he appears anywhere in the future, it’ll be in GUARDIANS.”
Also, Nathan Fillion posted a photo of his deleted GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 cameo, apparently as Simon Williams/Wonder Man.

LOCKE & KEY---Hulu pilot underway based on the comic book by Joe Hill, son of Stephen King. Hill and Carlton Cuse (LOST) are the producers. Scott Derrickson (DOCTOR STRANGE) is the director.

I guess this is what we can expect from Eastwood, as he's getting to the end of his career now. I just watched SULLY a few days ago and it just seemed to me to be making much of very little. I'm not saying the heroic things don't matter, but that as catalysts for a drama these are just moments.

For once, I agree completely with you. The fact that there was very little there, is fairly obvious by the gratuitous repetitions of the landing. Also, the events surrounding the landing (like the aftermath) wasn't particularly engrossing either. Zemeckis' FLIGHT was a much better film about more or less the same issue.

I haven't really liked an Eastwood film since GRAN TORINO (2008).

"Deserves got nothin' to do with it."

If you don't think UNFORGIVEN is a God-damned masterpiece, then you'd better throw your Eastwood badge into the water!

Again, I agree with you Mr. Phelps! I keep trying to get a friend of mine who's never seen it to seek it out and watch it, but he won't budge. Some people.... frown

Unforgiven was good, give you that, but despite its weaker moments with sondra locke in, Josey Wales was still better.

American sniper was well put together as was his flags of our fathers - but for a man who had the world at his feet after the spaghettis, Eagles, kellys, coogan and the first 2 dirty harrys, he sure did churn out some crap over 40 years.
More unwatchable duds than hits.

While I agree with you that Clint has put out some duds over the years (BRONCO BILLY, PINK CADILLAC, etc.), I disagree about JOSEY WALES being better than UNFORGIVEN. It was really good, but not THAT good!

UNFORGIVEN is brilliant -- one of the best films of the 90s.

But he's done some pretty good movies since then too -- A PERFECT WORLD, MYSTIC RIVER, MILLION DOLLAR BABY, the WW2 series and GRAN TORINO are all highlights for me. While he's not an auteur in any way, he often delivers solid films; a true craftsman. It's just in the last decade that I've not been particularly impressed.

Sometimes I skip the movies Eastwood has directed because I'm not interested in the subject matter, but in the last 16 years, I think he directed three excellent movies which were MYSTIC RIVER, AMERICAN SNIPER, and MILLION DOLLAR BABY. (He was also was a superb actor in Million Dollar Baby.)

Wish he'd stop doing the music for his films. I wonder, often, how much better ALL the films Joan listed would have been with a musician scoring the films, as opposed to an "auteur." ESPECIALLY Mystic River.

CCOJOE, I so agree with you, especially about Mystic River. A real composers should have been hired. Eastwood doodles instead of composing.

WORD.

Seriously, Eastwood has made a ton of great movies since The Outlaw Josey Wales.. In fact, I'll go out of my way to provide a list. big grin

The Enforcer (1976)
The Gauntlet (1977)
Every Which Way But Loose (1978)
Bronco Billy (1980)
Sudden Impact (1983)
Pale Rider (1985)
Heartbreak Ridge (1986)
Unforgiven (1992)
Mystic River (2003 – director)
Million Dollar Baby (2004)
Letters from Iwo Jiwa (2006 – director)
Gran Torino (2008)

That's no fewer than twelve right there.
