I understand that Steiner's music for "Parrish" and "Rome Adventure" is more popular and in-demand than his music for 1961's "Susan Slade" (which was made by Delmer Daves in-between the aforementioned films), but why not squeeze "Susan' (or at least her main title) onto another one of his '60s-era scores as a bonus? It has one of Steiner's most lush, romantic and melodramatic themes in the composer's catalogue! Here's the trailer with snippets of his music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OERMJZjtsnE

Honestly, I'm all in for ANY of his unreleased 1960s film scores. Yeah, PARRISH and ROME ADVENTURE have had CD releases, but they are from the LP re-recordings, which differ from the film versions and at times are rather hoked-up. I'd rather hear the original tracks if they exist, especially if any exist in stereo.

I have graded the 1960s scores according to my own personal liking. I do not grade them against all of his past scores, but only against his own scores of the 1960s. I mean, we really don't have a KING KONG or a GONE WITH THE WIND in these last scores, but there is certainly some wonderful music.

So, we basically have (the value of each score is purely my own opinion):

1960: CASH McCALL (3)
ICE PALACE (4)
THE DARK AT THE TOP OF THJE STAIRS (3)
1961: THE SINS OF RACHEL CADE (3)
PARRISH (4)
SUSAN SLADE (3)
A MAJORITY OF ONE (4)
1962: ROME ADVENTURE (5)
1963: SPENCER'S MOUNTAIN (5)
1964: A DISTANT TRUMPET (4)
1965: TWO ON A GUILLOTINE (3.5) Not Max's best work, but contains many great sequences, and deserves
to be preserved, if for no other reason, as the legendary Max Steiner's last film score.

Among others, the GUILLOTINE tracks are gone but here is a short suite from the composite soundtrack:

A great piece of music, thanks for posting it Ray. Even at age 77 Max was still on top of his game.
I wish Max could have scored a few more films in the 60s, he still had such a gift for melody even toward the end of his career.

Well, unfortunately, by the mid-60ies, both his style and his huge experience were not in demand any more. Tony Thomas in one of his books mentioned the story of a young studio executive, who asked Steiner if he had ever scored a Western!
I think by then his health was deteriorating as well. But I fully agree with you: Some of his final scores still have a freshness you would not believe came from a composer of his age!

Jim, What about YOUNGBLOOD HAWKE (1964) - terrific main title in that one...
