Yeah, "Sold Out" means at Varese. Still maybe available from other venders. Actually I've gotten Varese titles months after a sell out at Movie Music and SAE.

Does anybody actually own both versions? If so what's your opinion about the SQ?

Untill a couple of days ago I owned both (just gived the old version to a friend), so I did compared them and yes, to my ears the SQ of the new one is slightly better. The volume is enhanced and somehow the sound is brighter, altough nothing drastical. On the other hand, the new artwork is way better, not only the images but the booklet also has liner notes.

Coincidentally or not the long awaited and promised digital version of the new release appeared in iTunes. It has the new and extensive booklet in the form of a digital booklet. And perhaps a new first in which the album cover says limited edition 500 just like the CD version. I just assumed it was easier not to correct the CD cover art but it's kind of an interesting thing to see on a digital release. It was worth the wait though it never was announced as a new soundtrack by iTunes. But im happy.

It has replaced the older digital one. Own both digital versions.

One of the biggest television mini-series of all time, Herman Wouk’s THE WINDS OF WAR was an almost 15-hour series, shown in seven parts on ABC in February 1983. It was watched by over 80 million viewers! Composer Bob Cobert’s theme and score are now classic. Cobert recorded this album of highlights for Varèse Sarabande back in ’83. Thanks to the new Varèse 500 series we have been able to remaster and repackage the album for the first time since its original release.

Set against the backdrop of world events that led to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, The Winds of War stars Robert Mitchum as Victor "Pug" Henry, a career naval officer who along with his family, learns to navigate the waters of his dangerous times in the late 1930s. While Germany expands and proceeds to seize several border countries, Italy attempts to establish a Fascist Colonial Empire under Mussolini and Japan prepares for a major battle with China. Meanwhile, the Henry clan finds itself drawn into the center of the conflict as they deal with the drama, romance, tragedy and heroism that lead to America's involvement in World War II.

Cobert scored the TV series "Dark Shadows". It's theme, "Shadows In The Night", was popular at the time. It was recorded by Henry Mancini on his "Six Hours Past Sunset" LP.
"Winds Of War" was orchestrated by my friend Jack Hayes. I wonder if he got credit somewhere in the booklet.

no, it doesn't seem so..the only proper credits are the ones on the back of the cd (as shown in the pics) and then there's the Varese-style booklet text e.g. pithy, where rather bizarrely they give an inordinate amount of space to the infamous and distasteful plagiary controversy, instead of analyzing the gorgeous music.
And as far as I can see the excellent orchestrator is not mentioned..

Update: I went to check the booklet of the old release, and there's no mention of the orchestrator as well.

Is this a straight reissue ofdthe original C.D. (of which the orchestra was conducted by Zsolt Deaky) and is it a rerecording?
