One of the biggest television mini-series of all time, Herman Wouk’s THE WINDS OF WAR was an almost 15-hour series, shown in seven parts on ABC in February 1983. It was watched by over 80 million viewers! Composer Bob Cobert’s theme and score are now classic. Cobert recorded this album of highlights for Varèse Sarabande back in ’83. Thanks to the new Varèse 500 series we have been able to remaster and repackage the album for the first time since its original release.

Set against the backdrop of world events that led to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, The Winds of War stars Robert Mitchum as Victor "Pug" Henry, a career naval officer who along with his family, learns to navigate the waters of his dangerous times in the late 1930s. While Germany expands and proceeds to seize several border countries, Italy attempts to establish a Fascist Colonial Empire under Mussolini and Japan prepares for a major battle with China. Meanwhile, the Henry clan finds itself drawn into the center of the conflict as they deal with the drama, romance, tragedy and heroism that lead to America's involvement in World War II.

Wonderful to be able to buy a Cobert score CD without having to buy a box-load of their other unrelated CDs in order to do so (as with Cobert's Jekyll and Hyde). Thank you Varese!

Fine score... but had a bit of bad publicity attached to it:

From The Chicago Tribune, 1991: — John Woodbridge, a Northwestern University history professor who sued Paramount pictures for plagiarism, on Monday won his claim that the giant film studio stole his song and used it as the main theme in the mini-series ``Winds of War.``

A U.S. District Court jury in Los Angeles deliberated for only three hours before finding against Paramount and composer Robert Cobert, said Woodbridge`s attorney, Michael Polin, in a telephone interview.

Polin said the jury found that Woodbridge`s melody, copyrighted in 1965 under the title ``Sans Vous,`` was original to him, that no ``prior art`` to which it could be compared exists, and that the two tunes were ``strikingly similar.``

Polin had argued that Cobert had access to Woodbridge`s work through a mutual friend.

Paramount attorneys countered with an attempt to show that Woodbridge`s melody was recurrent in the works of classical composers.

Polin said the next phase in the proceeding will be the setting of damages to be paid by Paramount and Cobert to Woodbridge, who also teaches church history at Trinity College in Deerfield, Ill.

Woodbridge`s victory marks the second plagiarism loss for Paramount this year. The film studio last month lost a case involving a script written by humorist Art Buchwald that was used for the Eddie Murphy movie, ``Coming to America.`` The Buchwald case also is in the damages-setting phase.

There's a CD of Cobert's "War and Remembrance"(1988) available from another label, and included in the 2008 DVD box set:

I never picked up the original CD, and then it got expensive, so nice to add it now.

Plus a big thumbs up on the cover art!

When exactly it got so expensive? I see copies available for like 7 USD.

When I last looked, whenever that was. Strangely enough, I don't constantly search on every CD released.

Glad this was re-released for those who do not have it. This is a title I never had, but I now own my father's copy, which I am listening to right now. Guess I am happy enough with the old release. I will have to find the DVD set of "War and Remembrance" that my Dad had, I think it is the one with the score included. Will be digging it out tonight.

Nice score. And if any label should eventually release the original score recording instead of the Nuremberg rerecording I would even buy the soundtrack.

Just pulled my old CD out. I'd forgotten how superb this score is - just stunning. And the sound is fine - no obvious need to upgrade.

Thanks for providing samples. I remember watching this series as a youngin' when it originally aired but haven't heard the music since. It will be mine.

I considered buying the previous release off of Amazon for a few bucks less, but the new cover is worth the price.
