Literally no mention so far of my favourite - the chestnut. I like cashews, monkey nuts and dry-roasted peanuts in particular, but I'm happy with any that are put in front of me. However, none can compare with roasted chestnuts and it's just as well that they're only in the shops for a few weeks up to Christmas.
I like chestnuts too but you have to cook them. Chestnuts are fine during winter time, in my opinion.

And sliced water chestnuts make a fine addition to a Chinese meal.
Favorites: Cashews - Love 'em, but in moderation as they are rich and oily. Salted peanuts - Whole or shelled, and salted. Pistachios - Again, in moderation. Boiled peanuts - I find them addictive. Seems that these rate at opposite ends of the spectrum - folks find them either succulent or sickening.
I wonder how many of you share this reminiscence - as a child in the 1960s, if you had 25 cents to spare, you might buy a Coke (6 1/2 oz glass bottle) and a pack of peanuts, open the nuts and pour them into the Coke. It served two purposes: It was a tasty treat, combining both flavors, and it discouraged friends from begging a swig off your Coke.
