In collaboration with Gruppo Sugar and Musiques & Solutions, Music Box Records is pleased to present on the same CD the expanded original motion picture soundtracks composed and conducted by Claude Bolling. Alain Delon starred in and co-produced the two films: Le Gitan (The Gypsy, 1975) and 3 hommes à abattre (Three Men to Kill, 1980).

For 3 hommes à abattre directed by his long-time collaborator Jacques Deray, Claude Bolling composed one of his most ambitious works in cinema. For this modern urban thriller, he wrote a neo-classical score with serious and aching lyricism. A feeling of unease and threat dominates the score, which still allows for a few sentimental moments associated with the lead female character.

For Le Gitan, French director José Giovanni wanted a theme inspired by Django Reinhardt. He met the young composer Lick on the shooting of his film and asked him to compose the heart-breaking song (O Sinto). Alain Delon, who was co-editor of the film’s music, asked Claude Bolling to supervise the recording of the song and compose the second theme (Cousin Django).

This present edition has been fully remastered from the session tapes and includes an 8-page booklet with liner notes by Gilles Loison, discussing the films and the scores.

Thanks. Quite happy to finally have "Le Gitan", though I'm less a fan of 80s period.

Love me some Bolling, and the samples sound great. Definitely getting this one.

Indeed a very welcome release! I just can't wait to listen to the 44' dark and consistent complete score of 3 HOMMES A ABATTRE. Besides, I wish MBR will go on releasing the music of this talented and multifold composer. If the rights can be cleared, there is no problem whatsoever because Bolling has kept copies of all his mastertapes in his own archive.

Hi, Laurent78.

Would you happen to know if Mr. Bolling's tape archive extends back to the early 1960s?
I'm curious to learn if sound elements exist on Ladies Man (1960), The Hands of Orlac ('60), The World in My Pocket ('61), The Day and the Hour ('63) or Web of Fear ('64).

[I recall FSM's Anabel Boyer mentioning several years ago about a possible release on The Day and the Hour, but this doesn't seem to have ever materialized...]

Zardoz, I visited Bolling only once back in 1990 to interview him for Luc van de Ven's Soundtrack magazine and therefore can't tell for sure if he has all his early scores such as LE JOUR ET LA NUIT at his disposal. But I can definitely remember he has filed all his tapes on shelves in a very rigorous manner and I suppose he has at least the EP tapes of these old soundtracks you mentioned. All I know is that whenever his material is needed for CD's, it's most of the time available directly from him. Think of many releases so far such as the Frémeaux 2 CD of LES BRIGADES DU TIGRE (his masterpiece imo), the 3 CD box set career anthology issued by Frémeaux as well (including a lot of tracks never published before), various MBR releases, etc.

Thanks for the info!

I hope there's more music available than the contents of those EPs.
Whatever exists, though, let's hope an album producer has an interest in such.

Found a copy yesterday in Paris and these Delon scores are simply great, both in a different vein of course. This album must be a true success since it's alreay sold out on MBR's website.
Something I learnt from the liner notes and the booklet regards LE GITAN: I was convinced that François de Roubaix was actually supposed to score it and just didn't because of his untimely death at sea in November 1975. I even once heard Giovanni told him he could go freely to the Canaries in order to make undersea pictures because LE GITAN wasn't ready yet. But the credits show something completely different: the score has been recorded during the summer of 1975 already, after Delon had met with Lick, the gypsy musician who provided the song O Sinto! Just wonder why De Roubaix eventually wasn't involved in the process after all.

I'm aware of it. Still, to my knowledge it's the first time that a MBR Bolling title sells out so quickly, isn't it? Anyway, it's a well-deserved success because both scores needed to be expanded.
