As per henry's favorite Best Picture winner thread, here's a thread where we get to "make things right" and submit the Best Picture winners of any given year---films that SHOULD have won the Best Picture Oscar.

For the purposes of this thread, any film that was either nominated or not may be submitted. For the interest of those reading, please "state your case" as to WHY your Best Picture "winner" deserved to win.

1977- STAR WARS! Cause it made films "fun" again. What's not to like?

1982- Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan! Shatner at his best. Should've been nominated for best actor. Great story, wonderful script, one of the best villains in film history. Awesome effects and a captivating score.

Seriously if Return of the King could win best picture, these two should have come into play too.

The Night of the Hunter. I have never seen another film like it; it is a one of a kind. Stunning set design, lighting, music, and a superb performance by Robert Mitchum; he could go from being a buffoon to a monster in the blink of an eye. Two scenes are etched on my memory: when Powell chases the children in the boat into the river, and when Powell is sitting in the yard, and Rachel is sitting on her porch and they sing a hymn together. An unforgettable film.

I have one that will be truly unpopular.

In 1972, "Cabaret" should have been Best Picture.

It won 8 other Oscars, including Actress, Supporting Actor and Director.

I didn't like "The Godfather" then, and I'm only so-so about it now.

"The Godfather II"...now that was a Best Picture!

I would probably change 90% of the Oscar choices for BP. That would include:

1927-28: Sunrise (this did win Best Artistic Production, but not BP)

1936: Modern Times

1940: Fantasia

1941: Citizen Kane

1948: The Red Shoes

1950: Sunset Boulevard

1955: The Night of the Hunter

1956: Giant

1958: Vertigo

1959: North by Northwest

1963: America America

1966: Seconds or Blow-Up

1968: 2001

1969: They Shoot Horses, Don't They?

1973: American Graffiti

1975: Nashville or Dog Day Afternoon

1979: All That Jazz or Apocalypse Now

1983: The Right Stuff

1985: Brazil

1986: The Mission or Blue Velvet

1988: The Unbearable Lightness of Being

1989: Field of Dreams

1990: Goodfellas

1991: Barton Fink or Jungle Fever

1996: Breaking the Waves

1997: The Ice Storm

1999: Magnolia

2000: Almost Famous

2003: House of Sand and Fog

2008: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

2011: The Tree of Life

2012: The Master

2013: Inside Llewyn Davis

2014: The Grand Budapest Hotel

2015: Joy or Brooklyn

2016: Silence

I tried to stick to English-language films only as that seems to be the Oscar rule.

Cool Hand Luke in 1967. (It wasn’t even nominated for best picture. Duh.)
American Graffiti 1973
Dead Poets Society 1989
Saving Private Ryan 1998
Brokeback Mountain 2005
The Imitation Game 2014

My only justification is that I thought the above movies were the best in those years and better than the actual winners.

These are the obvious choices.
Others, I don't know what they were up against.

I agree.
But CABARET isn't a best picture either, imho

It was head-and-shoulders the best film of its year.

IMO, natcherly!

American Graffiti 1973

I'm with you on that, Mark R.Y. and Joan Hue. I thought THE STING was a good film, but I watch it maybe once every ten years or so. (I also never hear anyone talk about it anymore, except fleetingly.) I watch AMERICAN GRAFFITI frequently, and find it the far more poignant and meaningful film, to me anyway, of the two.
